Finish an eastbound Garden Route trip at Addo and decide whether to fly from Gqeberha, where to spend your final night and when to return the car.
Cape Town Airport Layover: Should You Leave the Terminal?

Work backwards from your next flight to decide whether there is time for a Waterfront visit, a rest near the airport or a quieter wait in the terminal.
With six hours between flights at Cape Town International Airport, plan to stay at the airport unless the day leaves you a clear margin. With eight or nine hours in daylight, a short V&A Waterfront visit may fit if you can enter South Africa, have a plan for your bags and can get back well before your airline's deadline. The hours on your itinerary include everything from getting off the first plane to getting onto the next one.

Work backwards from the airport return time
Start with the operating airline's recommended airport arrival time and the check-in, baggage and boarding deadlines for your onward flight. They are different cutoffs. FlySafair's travel guidance, for example, recommends arriving at least two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international departures, with extra time in busy periods. Use the instructions for your own flight.
- Allow for deplaning and any arrival checks or bag collection. Use the time you actually reach the public arrivals hall to recalculate.
- Confirm where your checked bag goes. Ask the operating carrier whether it is tagged through or must be collected and checked in again. Arrange any storage and confirm collection hours before committing to an outing.
- Estimate both road journeys for the hour each will happen. Add time to meet the driver and a margin for congestion or a change of vehicle.
- Decide your latest pickup time from the destination before setting off. If the remaining time is too short for a meal or a walk at an easy pace, stay at the airport.
For example, a flight due out at 18:00 with a 15:00 airport arrival target leaves a very different day from an 18:00 flight for which you can arrive at 16:00. If you leave arrivals at noon in the first scenario, the three hours before airport return still have to cover two transfers and a margin for delay. This is a worked example, not an estimate of Cape Town road times.
Choose one stop you can cut short
The Waterfront is a useful option when the time budget works. You can walk by the harbour, sit down for a meal or browse a shop and leave as soon as you need to. Agree on a specific pickup point and set a reminder for your departure. Check venue hours if you want to go inside. Our Two Oceans Aquarium guide helps with a longer family stop, but a walk and a snack work better when time is tight.

Save the cableway, a Robben Island ferry or a Cape Point and penguin trip for a longer stay. A queue, fixed departure or extra stretch of road can turn one delay into a missed flight. Avoid prepaid activities that you would feel obliged to finish once the clock starts to slip.
When it makes sense to stay near departures
Stay put if your inbound flight is late, your onward flight is on a separate booking with a tight margin, or you still need to sort out entry, bag storage or boarding passes. Check with your carrier and the relevant authorities if you are unsure whether you can enter the country during transit. If you are weighing a lounge, check which part of the airport it is in, whether your ticket or pass is accepted and when you can get to it. For a long overnight stop, confirm an airport-area room and transfer rather than assuming a sightseeing venue will be open.
The question comes up in traveller discussions about six-hour Cape Town layovers. One useful test is whether you would still enjoy the outing if you spent less time there than planned. If the answer is no, keep the connection simple and save the peninsula for another trip. For a stop measured in nights rather than hours, see our airport-to-Simon's Town guide or check availability at Aqua Terra.
