Two Oceans Aquarium With Kids: Feeding Times and a Two-Hour Plan

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan two hours at Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium around a penguin, shark or other feeding presentation and two exhibits.

For a two-hour family visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, pick one feeding presentation and two exhibits you want time to explore. The usual programme lists African penguin feeding at 11:30 and 14:30 every day. The noon feeding rotates between the Ocean Exhibit, Kelp Forest and Shark Exhibit depending on the weekday. Check the programme for your date, then aim to be through the entrance before your chosen presentation.

Choose the feeding session first

The Aquarium's daily programme lists noon feeds in the I&J Ocean Exhibit on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and in the Kelp Forest Exhibit on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. On Saturday it lists the ragged-tooth shark feed at noon. The African penguin feed is in the Penguin Exhibit. Aquarium staff explain aspects of the animals' care during the presentations. Confirm times and the viewing location at the entrance, especially if your party has a favourite animal in mind.

For a group with small children, the same programme lists puppet shows in the Children's Play Centre. Pick one show or feed if keeping to two hours matters. You can try a second if it is nearby and everyone still wants to stay. Give children a place to stand or sit where they can see and follow the staff's directions for moving around a busy viewing area.

Two hours can cover a feed and a few good stops

For a late-morning example, aim to enter at 10:30 for the 11:30 penguin feed. Spend the first part of the visit on one gallery and make time to find the Penguin Exhibit. Afterwards, walk to one large tank and stay long enough to watch animals move across it. If you want the noon presentation too, check on arrival whether it is close enough to reach without rushing the first one. The time spent at each exhibit is up to your group.

For an afternoon visit, enter around 13:30 and anchor the plan on the 14:30 penguin feed. Begin with the large Ocean Exhibit or the Shark Exhibit. Finish in a smaller gallery when the group has had enough of the big tanks. If you are late and miss the presentation, use the extra time for closer viewing and ask the staff whether another public activity is coming up.

The Aquarium map is useful for finding ramps and deciding which level to visit next. Staff can point you towards the current layout if a route differs from an older map. With a pram, wheelchair or visitor who needs time between levels, start with your chosen exhibit and allow extra transfer time. The Aquarium lists accessible flooring and baby-changing facilities on its planning page. Ask its team about your exact needs if the published information is insufficient.

Use the large tanks and small galleries differently

In the I&J Ocean Exhibit, start at the big viewing panel to see how the animals use the open water. Look for movement at the edges as well as near the glass. In the Kelp Forest Exhibit, watch for fish moving between the fronds. The Shark Exhibit gives you a different view of large animals moving through the tank. On a weekday, the sharks are still an exhibit choice even when a shark feed is absent from the programme.

The Jelly Gallery and Microscope Exhibit can suit a slower last stop. Pause in front of one display and see what changes as you watch. At the Microscope Exhibit the Aquarium magnifies small animals on screens so you can notice details that are difficult to see unaided. With mixed ages, let each person choose one thing to show the rest of the group before you head to the next tank.

Buy admission for the people, then plan the time

One family planning a two-hour Monday visit asked how to price admission for adults, young children and a teenager. Another parent asked whether a group booking was needed. Families can buy ordinary visitor tickets online or at the ticket office. Check the current admissions page for each visitor's category and eligibility. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. The listed last ticket sale is 30 minutes before closing, which is a cutoff rather than enough time for the plan above.

The Aquarium's food and drink page says a day ticket permits same-day return if you leave for a meal. Keep the ticket and ask staff how to re-enter before leaving. The Aquarium asks visitors to keep outside food and drink for elsewhere. If the plan includes an independently booked Waterfront activity, leave room to walk to its actual meeting point.

For a decision about bundled attraction admission, see the separate Aquarium and Cape Town City Pass comparison. For an extended Cape Peninsula holiday, check Aqua Terra's direct availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
