What to Pack for Cape Town: A Local's Season-by-Season List

Pack for Cape Town in layers, bring swimwear in every season, and never, ever leave the sunscreen behind. That is the short version. The longer version matters because Cape Town sits between two oceans and a mountain, which means four seasons can share a single day: misty dawn, blazing ten a.m., windy lunch, golden evening. Visitors who pack one outfit for "summer" or "winter" always end up buying an extra fleece here. The good news: shopping here is excellent, so mistakes are fixable.

This is the list we give guests before they arrive at our Simon's Town guesthouse, updated season by season.

The non-negotiables (any time of year)

• Sunscreen and sunglasses. Southern-hemisphere UV is ferocious, even cloudy and even in winter. Factor 50, reapply.
• A windproof layer. Not a pretty jacket that fears weather; a proper windbreaker. The south-easter means business.
• Comfortable walking shoes. The best of Cape Town is experienced on foot: mountain paths, tidal pool rocks, harbour strolls.
• Swimwear. Yes, in July too. Winter whale-watching days are often glassy and mild, and the brave still swim.
• A daypack. For hikes, beach days and the extra layer you will shed by eleven.
• A reusable water bottle. Tap water is excellent and the city is proudly water-conscious.
• Type M plug adapter (or a universal one), plus a power bank for long photo days.

Summer packing (November to March)

Think Mediterranean with sharper light: shorts, dresses, linen, a wide-brim hat, and your good sunglasses. Evenings cool down fast once the sun drops, so pack a light jacket or a nice knit for dinner. Beach kit matters here: quick-dry towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and shoes you can walk on hot sand and granite boulders. If you plan sunrise hikes or the cableway, add a warm layer for the top; the mountain is always colder than the street.

Winter packing (June to August)

Winter here is not European winter; it is green, dramatic and changeable. Pack a proper rain jacket rather than an umbrella (the wind wins that fight), warm layers you can peel, a beanie and gloves for early whale-watching starts, and waterproof shoes if you plan to hike when the waterfalls are running. Then pack the summer things too, because a winter front often clears by noon into a still, warm afternoon that feels like a personal apology. This is also the season for long dinners and wine-farm fires, so one smart-casual outfit earns its space.

The things people always forget

• Binoculars. Whales, penguins, seals, dolphins, eagles. Half our guests end up borrowing theirs from us.
• A real camera or extra phone storage. You will take more photos than you think.
• Motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive; Chapman's Peak Drive and boat trips are worth it but winding.
• A small day-first-aid kit (plasters, rehydrate salts) for hiking days.
• Patience for the wind. Not packable, but the most useful thing to bring.

Quick answers

Do I need warm clothes in summer? One warm layer, yes. Evening sea breezes are cool and the mountain top is cold year-round.

Can I buy things there instead of packing them? Mostly yes: outdoor gear, swimwear and pharmacy basics are easy to find in Cape Town. Specialised hiking kit is worth bringing from home.

What about dress codes? Cape Town is relaxed. Smart-casual covers nearly every restaurant on the peninsula and most in the city.
