Vanderkloof Camping: Dam Shore or Orange River?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Choose a dam-side or downstream camp near Vanderkloof, confirm your pitch and decide if the detour works for one night or a full day.

Choose a Vanderkloof Dam-side pitch if you want the reservoir setting, or enquire about Sandgat if you would rather camp beside the Orange River below the wall. Those are separate places with different access and conditions. Before changing a longer road trip to fit either one, confirm a pitch for your setup and decide whether you want an overnight stop or a full day by the water.

Check which side of the dam your booking is on

The Department of Water and Sanitation's dam information identifies Vanderkloof as a separate Orange River reservoir. Gariep Dam is farther upstream. A search for Orange River camping can bring up accommodation near either reservoir as well as riverside sites away from the dam walls. Save the actual campsite location and ask the provider for the approach it recommends. Use the booking address, rather than a navigation search for the dam name alone.

Vanderkloof Damwal Karavaan Park describes its site as being on the reservoir shore and advertises water, power and braai areas. If you are choosing it for a caravan, camper or tent, ask how that applies to the pitch offered on your dates. The website also mentions solar lighting. Check what electricity is available at the pitch if your cooking, cooling or charging depends on it.

Sandgat has an enquiry listing, and a local trip operator names it as one of the area's accommodation options. Treat these as leads and confirm directly that the campsite is taking bookings and what services are operating. Ask whether you will be next to the river, what the bank is like from that pitch, and whether the area you want to use is open to guests.

Match the pitch to the way you travel

Ask for the total overnight cost, latest arrival and check-out time, and whether a deposit secures the exact pitch or only the booking category. Describe your setup, including any trailer, and ask about space to turn and park. If shade, private facilities or a short walk to the ablutions matters, check those details for the pitch itself. A picture of a shaded lawn cannot tell you where the available site is.

If you are looking for a quiet two-night camp, also ask what is expected on those dates. An otherwise suitable site may have different activity at a busy weekend or event. If you want a simple stop, choose the booking you can reach and set up at in time, and bring what you need for supper and breakfast. Do not make a late arrival dependent on finding food or supplies after check-in.

Before you pay, compare what each price includes. Check for extra charges for people, electricity or a second vehicle, and ask what happens if the campsite changes the pitch or your route is delayed. A booking confirmation should give you a usable contact and arrival instructions. Keep a copy that you can read without a connection.

Plan the water separately from the overnight

A shore-side pitch can be the whole point of the holiday even if you never go onto the water. Leave time to sit outside, watch the view or explore an authorised part of the town and shoreline. Ask the campsite what access actually comes with the booking. Do not assume there is access to the dam wall or to shoreline owned by someone else.

If your reason for going is fishing, paddling or launching a boat, ask the relevant land manager or provider about the exact access and requirements before paying for the trip. Check whether a ramp or entry point is operating on the dates you want, and whether current water conditions change your plan. A reservoir photo and a river report describe different settings. For current conditions below the dam, follow the relevant authority and operator advice rather than assuming the water behaves as it did on a previous visit.

For a group with different interests, choose an overnight that works even if the water outing changes. A riverside booking without a water activity can still give the trip a purpose. If the only reason for choosing a particular pitch is a launch or a guided session, confirm that activity independently or use a flexible booking.

Decide whether the detour deserves a second night

For a one-night stop, compare the approach and the onward leg using your actual endpoints. A campsite can look close to the road on a regional map and still add time after fuel, supplies and the final turnoff. Confirm the latest arrival first. For two nights, the extra day lets you enjoy the setting instead of pitching late and packing early.

If your trip also includes the area near Kimberley, our Mokala National Park guide covers a different wildlife stop. Choose the camp based on the part of the road trip it serves. For a separate Cape Peninsula leg, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
