Montagu or Barrydale? Where to Stay on Route 62

Choose a Route 62 overnight stop between Paarl and Oudtshoorn by comparing Montagu and Barrydale, drive direction, meal times and check-in.
Choose Montagu if you want a shorter first stage from Paarl and time for a walk or museum visit before dinner. Choose Barrydale if you prefer to drive farther east on the first day and leave less of the inland journey for tomorrow. In the other direction, Barrydale gives you the earlier break after Oudtshoorn. Check the route from your actual addresses before comparing driving times.
A family planning a summer road trip between Oudtshoorn and Paarl asked about spending a night in Montagu or another town while travelling with a toddler. Their question is about where to end one driving day and begin the next. Start with the split that works for your group, then use meals, check-in and one local activity to choose between the towns.
Put the overnight stop where it helps most
| Direction | Montagu | Barrydale |
|---|---|---|
| From Paarl towards Oudtshoorn | Stop earlier and give the longer inland leg its own day. | Drive farther on arrival day and leave less road for the morning. |
| From Oudtshoorn towards Paarl | Cover more of the inland distance before the overnight stop. | Break earlier after leaving Oudtshoorn, with more travel to do the next day. |
| What to confirm first | How much time you want on Long Street and when the museum can receive you. | Late check-in, a confirmed evening meal and whether you want to leave before cafés open. |
The local Route 62 visitor information includes both towns on the inland corridor. This comparison assumes you have chosen that corridor. For the separate decision between the inland road and the N2, see our Cape Town to Garden Route stops guide.
Give Montagu a reason beyond the bed
Montagu works especially well when you can arrive in time to do something before checking in for the evening. Montagu Museum is housed in Joubert House and the Old Mission Church on Long Street. Ask which building is open and how much time you want there. An address on the same street does not mean the two buildings have identical admission arrangements.
For a short walk, use the municipal historic walk map to pick a few places near your accommodation or meal. Confirm surfaces and access if you use a stroller or need step-free entry. You can enjoy the streets and mountain setting even if the museum is closed when you arrive.
Set a latest comfortable arrival time before adding a winery or lunch en route. If the stop is mainly for sleep, a room with easy check-in and a meal you can organise may matter more than its view. Ask whether parking and unpacking are straightforward with the bags you have.
Use Barrydale to change the shape of the drive
Barrydale can be the natural place to finish a longer eastbound day or the first overnight stop when travelling west. Its places to eat and sleep are not all in the same building or open for the same service. Check where you would have dinner before choosing an accommodation address on the strength of a breakfast recommendation.
For a daytime example, Diesel & Crème currently publishes 08:00 to 17:00 opening with kitchen service ending at 16:30. Its notice lists closures on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Confirm the applicable hours if you are passing through on a holiday. For an example of a separate in-town address, Barrydale Karoo Boutique Hotel lists 11 Tennant Street on the R62.
Plan meals and the first stop next morning
If travelling with a young child, tell the host what you need for sleep, meals and unpacking before booking. Confirm the cot or room arrangement directly if it matters. Plan at least one flexible stop and keep dinner or breakfast within reach of the overnight room. Ask about food-service hours rather than relying on a listing's general description.
Check your full route on the Western Cape Government road closure page and confirm any pass or approach separately before departure. A route labelled scenic is only useful if you can make the stops and check-in that matter to the day. If you arrive late, carry the extra attraction into another morning only when it fits the drive you still have to do.
