Where Should You Stop Between Cape Town and the Garden Route?

The drive from Cape Town to the Garden Route can be done in one long day, but the best stop depends on whether you want coast, mountains, food or a slower overnight break. A good route plan also begins with the right Cape Town base.

First, decide which road suits your trip

The N2 is the direct route towards Mossel Bay and George. It works well when your priority is reaching the Garden Route efficiently. Route 62 runs inland through towns such as Montagu and Barrydale. It is usually chosen for mountain scenery, small-town stops and a more leisurely road-trip feel.

Best coastal stop: Hermanus

Hermanus is a useful choice if you want ocean scenery, a coastal walk or seasonal whale watching. It is not directly on the fastest N2 line, so allow time for the detour. An overnight stay makes more sense than a rushed lunch stop when the coast is a major part of your trip.

Best historic stop: Swellendam

Swellendam sits conveniently near the N2 and breaks the journey naturally. The town suits travellers interested in historic buildings, mountain views and a relaxed lunch. It is also practical for an overnight stop before continuing to Mossel Bay or deeper into the Garden Route.

Best food and country stop: Stanford or the Overberg

For a slower coastal-country route, consider a stop around Stanford and the Overberg. Farm stalls, cafes and quieter roads can turn the transfer into part of the holiday. This option is best when your schedule has room for meandering.

Best mountain road: Montagu and Route 62

Route 62 suits travellers who prefer dramatic passes and inland towns. Montagu is a natural overnight point, while Barrydale works well for lunch or a short break. Do not choose this route simply to save time. Choose it because you want the drive itself to be an experience.

Where does Simon's Town fit?

Simon’s Town is an excellent final Cape Peninsula base before heading east. Spend your Cape days around Boulders Beach, Cape Point and False Bay, then start the Garden Route transfer after breakfast. If you want a coastal route via Hermanus, it also positions you away from central Cape Town before the longer drive.

A simple planning rule

If you have fewer than ten days in South Africa, use the N2 and limit overnight stops. With more time, add either the Overberg coast or Route 62, not both, unless road-tripping is the main purpose of the holiday.
