Garden Route Camping: River, Forest Deck or Oceanfront?

Compare Ebb-and-Flow, Diepwalle and Storms River Mouth by camping setup, setting and facilities before reserving your Garden Route stops.
Choose Garden Route campsites by matching the setting to your equipment: Ebb-and-Flow for the Touw River and Wilderness lakes area, Diepwalle for a tent-deck stay in indigenous forest, or Storms River Mouth for a rocky oceanfront setting. These are different camping experiences, even though all fall within Garden Route National Park.
For a road trip, confirm the suitable pitch category and essential facilities before planning daily stops. A caravan site, a platform for your own tent and a permanent tent are not interchangeable bookings. This comparison focuses on that accommodation decision, rather than ranking every town along the route.

Start with what you will sleep in
A traveller planning seven days from Cape Town to Gqeberha, then described as Port Elizabeth, asked whether campsites with showers were available and whether they needed advance reservations. Those are the right questions to settle before collecting a caravan or motorhome.
Write down the vehicle length, tent footprint, number of people and whether electricity is essential. Include an awning or additional tent in the dimensions. Send those details to the camp if the booking description leaves any uncertainty. A picture containing caravans does not establish that the particular site on offer fits your setup.
Request current information about shared showers, hot water, the distance from the proposed pitch to the ablutions and the route between them. If mobility needs matter, ask about that complete route rather than relying on a general accessible-facilities label.
Ebb-and-Flow: choose a riverside camping base
Ebb-and-Flow Rest Camp belongs to the Wilderness section, where the Touw River, lakes and forest shape the visit. Choose it when spending time around an estuary and river appeals more than sleeping immediately beside ocean breakers. It is not an oceanfront pitch simply because Wilderness also has a beach.
SANParks provides separate North and South camp layout maps. Check the section and category on your reservation, then use the layout to ask about the pitch and facilities. The park's older visitor brochure describes caravan and tent sites with shared ablutions, including powered and unpowered choices. Confirm the operating facilities and power connection for the exact booking.
The camp page lists canoeing, walking and birding among the area's attractions. Check any paddle or trail separately with staff. SANParks lists no shop in the camp, so arrange your first meal and supplies before arrival. A river view does not establish suitable swimming conditions, an open route or a canoe reservation.
This base can work well when you want a full day without moving camp. Choose one local outing, then return to enjoy the setting instead of driving to several distant towns merely because they appear on the same regional map.
Diepwalle: choose the forest, then the tent arrangement
SANParks' accommodation overview describes elevated camping in Diepwalle Forest. This is the option to investigate when the main attraction is staying among trees rather than beside a lagoon or the sea.
Distinguish a camping deck for your own tent from an already erected deck tent. The park's visitor brochure describes both arrangements with communal ablutions. Its fixed-tent description includes beds and basic mattresses, but no bedding. Confirm the present inventory, deck dimensions, what to bring and the walk from parking before choosing between them.
A timber tent deck should not be booked as though it were a drive-on motorhome or caravan pitch. If you are travelling only with a vehicle-based sleeping setup, ask SANParks for a suitable alternative rather than assuming every camping category accommodates it.
Diepwalle also adds a different approach journey. The current directions identify the R339 approach beyond Knysna as a provincial gravel road. Ask about current conditions and check the rental agreement for your vehicle. SANParks temporarily closed the Diepwalle decks, huts and trails in June 2026 during severe weather. Confirm the deck, road and facilities for your dates before booking around them.
Storms River Mouth: choose a coast-facing stay deliberately
Storms River Mouth Rest Camp offers a substantially different setting, close to the rocky coast in the Tsitsikamma section. It is separate from Storms River Village. Use the rest camp's actual entrance and reception details when planning the arrival.
The booking categories distinguish tent and caravan sites, with further differences in power and view. Select the category that matters to you, then confirm the allocation process. A general photograph of the coastline does not mean every pitch has the same outlook.
The camp page lists a shop and restaurant, but check their current service before relying on them for the first evening. Bring what you need for your confirmed self-catering plan. Coastal views are the attraction; sheltered-looking water or a nearby trail is not an assurance that an activity is suitable or open that day.
Reserve the essential nights and compare complete costs
Use the reservation route linked from the official camp directory, or contact the appropriate section. Confirm the equipment category, dates, people and facilities before committing to the rest of the route. An old forum reply suggesting winter walk-ins is not today's availability report.
Ask for the full quote, including additional people or vehicles, conservation fees and any applicable reservation charges. The current park fee page separates the Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma sections. Use the tariff period covering your trip. For a visit from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, SANParks publishes section-specific daily conservation fees and lists a 1% community fund charge on accommodation and activity reservations.
Choose fewer camp changes when the holiday is short. Packing a tent, checking out, shopping and setting up again can occupy much of a transfer day. For wider night allocation, use our Garden Route nights guide; let this comparison settle the camping setup and setting.
Check the park's current notices and contact the camp before departure for weather-related access changes. Keep a practical alternative if an essential activity cannot operate. If your wider holiday includes a separate Cape Peninsula stay before or after camping, Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older. Check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town.
