Crocodile Bridge or Malelane? Choose a Southern Kruger Gate

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Match Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge, Berg-en-Dal or Biyamiti to the right southern Kruger entrance and allow time to reach camp.

Use Crocodile Bridge as your starting plan if your first night in southern Kruger is at Lower Sabie or Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp. Choose Malelane for Berg-en-Dal or Biyamiti under normal access arrangements. Malelane comes first on the drive east from Johannesburg, but the right comparison ends at your accommodation. Check the route from the entrance gate to the camp as carefully as the drive to the gate.

Match the southern Kruger gate to the first camp

Lower Sabie: SANParks' route guidance recommends Crocodile Bridge, reached via Komatipoort. Lower Sabie is about 34 kilometres farther inside the park. Include that in your arrival budget, even if the navigation app first takes you to the entrance. The recommended road-to-camp combination is a planning starting point. Ask the park whether it is open on the day.

Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp: SANParks places the camp right at the gate. That removes the longer in-park leg to Lower Sabie, but you still need to clear entry and reach reception under the arrangements for your booking. Check the name in your confirmation. A privately operated property outside the park can use a similar location name.

Berg-en-Dal or Biyamiti: SANParks recommends Malelane. The directions list Berg-en-Dal about 12 kilometres from the gate and Biyamiti about 39 kilometres away. Malelane suits both as an approach, but they need different allowances after entry. If your confirmation says Malelane Satellite Camp, use the directions attached to that booking and check the exact arrival point.

Compare the two drives in minutes, not just kilometres

A traveller leaving Johannesburg for Lower Sabie asked which of the two entrances made more sense. The follow-up asks which gate is closer and when the camp gate closes. The SANParks gate page puts Malelane closer from Johannesburg on the usual eastbound approach. Crocodile Bridge comes farther along the N4 and is its recommended entrance for Lower Sabie. Choosing Malelane to spend longer inside the park only works when the full route is open and you have the extra time.

SANParks publishes different allowances for different planning purposes. Its shortest-route travel table lists one hour from Crocodile Bridge to Lower Sabie as an approximate minimum, while the directions page suggests about two hours. Use the more generous figure as a starting allowance and add time for entry, breaks and delays. Avoid treating a minimum or a single map estimate as your deadline.

Work backwards from the camp's arrival requirement. Deduct the in-park allowance first, then leave time for entrance formalities and contingencies. That gives you a latest useful arrival at the outside gate, which may be well before it closes. If you are considering an alternate gate, calculate its route to the camp from scratch. Check the park's gate schedules and the individual camp's arrangements for the month and date of travel.

When a first night outside is the better plan

Another traveller planning a Johannesburg arrival considered using Malelane or Crocodile Bridge depending on where they could stay the first night. That approach can suit a late flight, a long rental-car handover or a group that wants to shop and rest before entering. Choose an overnight stop near the entrance that suits your next camp and confirm its own check-in. Go into the park the following morning after checking conditions again.

If you already have an inside booking and the day starts to run late, contact the camp before reaching the gate. Ask what they can confirm for your specific reservation. Published late-arrival exceptions are limited and camp-specific. Do not count on an escort to Lower Sabie or plan to pass a closed gate. If no workable route and arrival can be confirmed, follow the park's advice about the booking and use an outside stop if needed.

Check the exact segment that matters

Ask SANParks about your external gate, the roads from that gate to camp and the camp gate itself. A January 2026 SANParks notice announced the reopening of Crocodile Bridge Gate to day visitors after weather disruption. A September 2026 update reported restored culverts on the H4-1 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie. These refer to different locations and dates. Use the newest park instructions for your route, especially after rain.

Put the two destination names into your trip notes before you leave. Use the named park entrance for the public-road leg and the exact camp from your confirmation for the second. Save both separately. If a navigation app changes the approach in transit, compare the new gate and road with what SANParks confirmed before accepting the reroute.

If you're sleeping outside and making a day visit instead, use SANParks' day-visit booking information for entry and capacity arrangements. If you are coming from the escarpment, our Panorama Route and Kruger itinerary helps you allocate separate sightseeing and transfer days.

If your wider holiday includes the Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra's direct availability in Simon's Town for that separate stage. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
