How to Combine the Panorama Route and Kruger

Give Panorama Route viewpoints and your Kruger arrival enough time, with a flexible overnight plan, official travel-time guidance and current Skukuza entrance notes.
Combine the Panorama Route and Kruger by treating scenic sightseeing and park arrival as separate parts of the holiday. If you can spare the time, stay near the Panorama Route for two nights, use the middle day for the places you most want to see, then transfer to your booked Kruger camp the following day. That gives both experiences room to breathe.
With less time, reduce the sightseeing list before compressing the drive. A traveller planning Johannesburg, Blyde River Canyon and Kruger asks exactly this: can a full scenic day also end near Skukuza by late afternoon? The answer depends on the actual stops, park entrance, camp and current access, not just the distance between the regions.
Start with the Kruger booking and work backwards
Your first overnight camp inside Kruger determines the useful park entrance and how much driving remains after entry. Confirm the correct gate, current road access, gate hours and camp arrival arrangements with SANParks. Then work backwards to set a realistic departure time from your Panorama Route accommodation.
SANParks' travel-time table describes its figures as approximate minimums along the shortest route at legal speed limits. It explicitly asks visitors to add time for stops. For example, the table lists 20 minutes between Paul Kruger Gate and Skukuza, while other gate-to-camp combinations take substantially longer. That is a planning reference, not an arrival guarantee.
Do not choose a gate solely because it appears convenient after the final viewpoint. Check the complete journey to your accommodation, including entry formalities and current diversions.
A simple three-day approach before the safari settles in
- Arrival day: travel to your chosen Panorama Route base, check in and keep any local sightseeing optional.
- Scenic day: choose a manageable selection of canyon views, rock formations, waterfalls or a forest experience, with time for meals and weather changes.
- Transfer day: leave with a comfortable margin for the correct Kruger gate and your overnight camp. Treat wildlife seen en route as a bonus rather than another fixed appointment.
This is a suggested structure, not a requirement to add nights you do not have. If your holiday is shorter, choose fewer viewpoints or keep the Panorama Route for a future trip. Protect the part of the journey that matters most to you.
Choose contrasting stops rather than every stop
Mpumalanga's official Panorama Route guide highlights attractions around Graskop including God's Window, Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls, the Pinnacle, Bourke's Luck Potholes and Blyde River Canyon. They offer different experiences, and each needs more than a quick parking stop if you want to enjoy it.
A useful shortlist might combine a canyon viewpoint with Bourke's Luck Potholes, then add one other stop according to your interests and remaining time. If waterfalls are the main attraction, build the day around those instead. Check current opening arrangements, admission charges, walking requirements and access before setting the sequence.

Allow a proper slot for the Graskop Gorge forest
If you include the Graskop Gorge Lift Company's forest experience, the operator suggests about an hour for the trail itself. That is only one part of the visit, so allow additional time for arrival, tickets and anything else you choose to do there.
The operator describes stairs and steep sections beyond the initial accessible portion of the trail. Ask about the exact experience suitable for your party rather than assuming the full forest route is step-free. Its current contact page lists daily hours of 08:30 to 17:00, weather permitting, and says the facility is cashless. Recheck arrangements before travelling.
Keep the scenic day flexible
Look at the forecast and actual visibility before committing the whole day to distant views. Ask your accommodation about conditions and current access, then decide which stops still suit the day. A paid activity or a long drive deserves a deliberate choice if the experience you wanted depends on clear views.
If you have only one sightseeing day, identify your two priorities in advance. Keep the remaining stops optional. This makes it easier to enjoy a place that holds your attention without letting the whole schedule unravel.
A current Skukuza arrival detail
Checked 2 November 2026: a SANParks maintenance notice closes Skukuza Rest Camp's main entrance from 2 November to an expected 4 December 2026. It provides a temporary camp entrance via Hippo Circle Street, through the AM Spa and Skukuza Safari Lodge area.
This notice concerns the rest camp entrance. It does not announce the closure of Paul Kruger Gate or the whole park. Follow the temporary signs and staff instructions, and confirm the latest position if your booking falls during or after the planned works.
Give the safari its own pace
Once inside Kruger, leave room for stops and unplanned wildlife delays while respecting the park's driving rules and current gate times. The end of a Panorama Route day should not depend on racing through the park to reach camp.
If your journey continues to Cape Town, allow a separate travel stage and enough time for the coast. Our South Africa driving guide helps with broader car-hire preparation. For the Cape Peninsula stay, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town.
