West Coast Fossil Park: Guided Dig Tour or Museum Visit?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Choose a guided dig visit, the museum or both at West Coast Fossil Park, and check the shorter weekend tour schedule before driving.

Choose the guided excavation visit at West Coast Fossil Park if seeing fossils where they were found is the reason you're going. Choose museum-only admission if you want a shorter indoor visit. The fossil park is at Langebaanweg on the R45 near Vredenburg, so check its own tour times before fitting it into a Langebaan day.

Decide between the tour and museum

The park's visitor page lists separate tickets for the tour, museum, and a combination. The guided outing gives you time at the excavation. The museum provides context about what lived in the region and what researchers can tell from the fossils. If you can do both, start with the confirmed tour time and give the museum an open block before or afterwards.

The park's own background dates the site's fossils to about 5.2 million years ago. Its examples include short-necked giraffes, sabre-toothed cats and bears. If you are taking someone who loves dinosaurs, explain that the draw here is a different chapter of prehistory and fossils at a real excavation site. Ask the guide which bones are easiest to recognise and how researchers record where they were found.

Check the last tour before choosing your arrival

The park lists Tuesday to Sunday operation and closes on Mondays. At review, it listed guided tours on the hour from 10:00 to 15:00 on weekdays it operates, and from 10:00 to 13:00 on weekends. That shorter weekend schedule matters if you are driving up after lunch. The park also lists Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday closures. Confirm the schedule for your exact date.

The visitor page says ordinary visitors generally do not need to book, while educational and tour groups should arrange a visit. Check whether your group needs to book and how early to arrive. If someone has a mobility requirement, ask about getting to the dig and what the tour involves. The availability of the exhibition hall does not settle access to every part of the guided visit.

Leave the second part of the day flexible

The visitor centre lists a restaurant, shop and exhibition hall. Check meal service if you plan to eat there, or keep lunch for Langebaan. If your group also wants a lagoon outing, choose the fossil tour first and fit the shore around it. Our West Coast National Park day-trip guide covers that separate park's access and activities.

Adding a separate Cape Peninsula stay? Aqua Terra in Simon's Town welcomes guests aged 12 and over. Check Aqua Terra availability.
