Verlorenvlei Birding: Plan an Elands Bay Wetland Stop

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Make time for Verlorenvlei on an Elands Bay trip. Compare open water and reedbed views and check public access before you stop.

If you are driving the West Coast through Elands Bay, give Verlorenvlei time as its own birding stop. The wetland has open water, reedbeds and a coastal outlet, but much of its shore is private. Plan to look from lawful public viewing points or ask a property where guests can watch. Bring binoculars and choose one stretch to spend time in.

Decide which part of the wetland to look at

BirdLife South Africa's site guide describes two useful parts of the landscape. Towards Redelinghuys, there are inland stretches of water and reeds to scan. Near Elands Bay, you can look at the lower wetland and its meeting with the coast. The Ramsar information sheet identifies the vlei as a wetland of international importance. That designation explains its conservation value. For a visit, you still need a point that can be reached legally and where you can park away from traffic.

If you're driving through from Lambert's Bay to the southern West Coast, choose the part that already fits your journey. If you are staying around Elands Bay, give yourself time to return to the same area when the light changes. Ask a local host about appropriate public places to pull off and watch. Skip a view if you cannot stop safely and legally. Much of the wetland can be seen at a distance, so a longer lens or a spotting scope may help if you already have one.

Watch the open water and reeds separately

BirdLife's guide lists species such as great white pelican and great crested grebe among possible sightings. Scan the open water first, then spend time looking along the edge of the reeds. Conditions vary with water levels, season and weather. Take a note of the habitat or take a photograph to identify later if a bird is too far away. Keep your distance and avoid crossing private land to get a better view.

Decide whether to stop briefly or stay nearby

A single planned viewing stop can work on a transfer day. If birding is the reason for the drive, a night nearby gives you more time and reduces the pressure to fit the wetland between two other attractions. Vensterklip Guest Farm near Elands Bay advertises accommodation and bird watching. Ask which access applies to your booking and where you can watch from, then confirm accommodation separately.

Choose one optional stop after the wetland, such as lunch in the area or time at a public coastal viewpoint. If visibility is poor, keep that part of the plan and try the wetland another time. You can appreciate the change from the inland vlei to the Atlantic coast without entering the water or visiting a cave.

If your drive continues south along the West Coast, our Paternoster weekend guide covers a separate beach and reserve outing.
