Tweede Tol in Bainskloof: Picnic or Camp?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Compare day picnicking and overnight camping at Tweede Tol, including what to reserve and what to ask about parking, river access and campsite facilities.

Book the Tweede Tol picnic site if you want lunch outdoors and time beside the Witte River. Book a campsite if you want to stay overnight and bring your own equipment. CapeNature treats these as separate reservations at Limietberg Nature Reserve. Neither reservation answers every question about the walk to the river.

Plan a day visit around the picnic site

The CapeNature booking page lists Tweede Tol Picnic Site separately from standard and private campsites. CapeNature's picnic page gives an 08:00 to 18:00 gate schedule and lists toilets. Reserve a picnic place if you are planning around a specific date. Day capacity is limited, and published capacity figures vary across the reserve information.

If someone in your group can walk only a short distance, ask about the current route from the parking area to the picnic spot, toilets and river. Ask specifically about steps, slopes, loose rock and where they could sit without continuing to the water. The booking page doesn't provide those details. Plan a picnic that still works if the river bank is unsuitable for your group.

CapeNature lists the Witte River pools for this part of the reserve and prohibits diving at its swimming holes. Ask staff whether river access is allowed when you arrive, especially after rain. Make any water activity optional and follow the reserve's directions. A picnic place does not establish whether an individual can reach or enter the water.

Choose the campsite for a night away

CapeNature's campsite page lists standard and private sites. There is no on-site shop, and the standard sites have no power points. Private sites are listed with USB charging rather than general power. Ask about the particular site if you have a caravan, since some private sites cannot take one. The reserve page also posts a 3.2 m height limit at the campsite entrance, a cash-only notice for campsite payments and a restriction on alcohol. Check which charges need paying at the gate and how to pay for the reservation online.

Buy supplies before the pass. CapeNature lists no pets and does not allow firewood at the campsite. If you plan to braai, confirm the permitted fuel and bring the equipment the site requires. Campers normally check out at 10:00. If you want to use the day picnic area afterwards, ask whether it has space and what day fee applies.

Keep a longer river outing separate

Named hiking trails and a guided river outing have their own arrangements. Check CapeNature's current alerts before adding a trail. At the November check, the authority listed the Kromriver and Elands trails as closed through 31 March 2027. For an organised river trip, see our guide to choosing a first guided Bainskloof outing. For a picnic or camp, start with the right reservation and check the facilities your own group needs.

Continuing to the Cape Peninsula? Aqua Terra in Simon's Town welcomes guests aged 12 and over. Check Aqua Terra availability.
