Should You Split Your Cape Town Stay Between the City and Simon's Town?

For many first-time visitors, splitting a Cape Town holiday between the city and Simon's Town is a smart choice. It gives you easier access to central attractions for part of the trip, then a calmer base near the penguins, Cape Point and the False Bay coast.

The tradeoff is simple: you move accommodation once, but you spend less holiday time repeatedly crossing the peninsula.

When a split stay works well

Consider two bases if you have five nights or more and the southern peninsula is a priority. A central stay is convenient for the V&A Waterfront, city restaurants, museums, Table Mountain and Atlantic Seaboard outings. Simon's Town is better positioned for Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Kalk Bay, coastal walks and unhurried mornings beside False Bay.

The split is especially useful if you want to see the penguins early, take a boat trip from Simon's Town, or explore Cape Point without turning it into a long return drive from the city.

When one base may be better

Stay in one place if you have only two or three nights, dislike repacking, or your plans are concentrated around central Cape Town. The same applies if every evening booking is in the City Bowl or Camps Bay. A split stay should solve a real logistics problem, not create a second check-in for its own sake.

A balanced plan for six nights

• Nights 1 to 3, central Cape Town: settle in, explore the city, visit Table Mountain when the weather is clear and keep one flexible urban day.
• Nights 4 to 6, Simon's Town: move south after breakfast, visit Kalk Bay en route, then use the next days for Boulders Beach and Cape Point.

This order works well after a long flight because the first transfer is short. Reversing it can also make sense if a Cape Point weather window appears early or if your final night needs to be closer to the airport.

How much travel time can you save?

Road conditions vary, particularly on weekday peaks and sunny weekends. The value of the split is not a guaranteed number of minutes. It is the ability to start southern activities nearby, return for a rest, and enjoy Simon's Town after day visitors leave.

If you will not have a car, arrange the inter-hotel transfer in advance. Rideshare works across much of Cape Town, but pre-booking gives more certainty when luggage and timing matter. Train services can be useful for day travel when operating, but check the latest timetable and do not rely on rail for a time-critical airport connection.

• Are at least two of your must-do activities south of Muizenberg?
• Do you have enough nights to spend at least two in each base?
• Will moving once save repeated long return journeys?
• Would you enjoy quiet coastal evenings as much as city nightlife?
