Slangkop Lighthouse: A Coastal Walk in Kommetjie

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan a short Kommetjie coastal walk towards Slangkop Lighthouse, check the boardwalk and confirm tower access separately.

Plan Slangkop Lighthouse as an outdoor stop in Kommetjie. The local residents' association describes a coastal path from the Kom towards the lighthouse, with sections of tar and boardwalk. You can make the path itself the outing, then turn back when you have had enough. Check separately with the port authority if you want to go inside the tower.

Choose a short stretch along the Kom

The Kommetjie Residents and Ratepayers Association's walking guide calls this route the Kom Cat Walk. It describes benches along the shore and views towards the surf breaks. Give the walk a flexible turnaround. If someone needs predictable footing or a place to sit, check the approach to the path and choose a section that works for the group on the day.

The association has previously reported boardwalk maintenance needs. That report does not establish current surface condition or which sections are open. Follow local signs, stay on the public path and turn back if there is a closure or damaged section. Take the sea view from the path rather than looking for a route across the shore around an obstacle.

Keep lighthouse entry separate

The Transnet National Ports Authority's Slangkoppunt page describes lighthouse tours. The local association's historical account also records prolonged closure and efforts to restore public access. A current tower schedule could not be confirmed from these sources. If climbing the tower is the reason for your visit, ask Transnet whether the grounds or tower can be visited on your date and what booking is needed.

The cast-iron lighthouse was commissioned in 1919. From the coast you can see how the white tower sits above the rocky shoreline. Treat the outside view as the planned stop and let any confirmed tour be a separate addition.

Fit Kommetjie into the Peninsula day

Give Kommetjie its own stop if you want time on the shore without adding another long walk. If you are heading to Cape Point later, check the reserve timing first and leave the Kom walk flexible. Our Cape Peninsula loop guide compares the Atlantic and False Bay directions. A short Kommetjie walk can fit into either, depending on your onward plans and road conditions.
