Simon's Town Tidal Pools: Miller's Point and Glencairn

Posted on Thu July 30, 2026 in Simon's Town Knowledge Hub.

Compare Miller's Point and Glencairn tidal pools near Simon's Town, with practical advice on conditions, safety, access and planning a False Bay swim.

Two of the most rewarding places to swim on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula sit within easy reach of Simon's Town: Miller's Point tidal pool and Glencairn tidal pool. They offer very different experiences, so the better choice depends on whether you want a quiet coastal outing or a convenient swim paired with other False Bay stops.

This locally informed guide compares both pools and explains how to plan the day without relying on perfect weather.

Miller's Point tidal pool

Miller's Point lies south of Simon's Town on the scenic road towards Cape Point. The setting feels noticeably wilder than the town beaches, with granite shoreline, fynbos and broad views across False Bay. The tidal pool is associated with the Miller's Point resort area, where the City of Cape Town lists beach access, footpaths, camping and family facilities.

This is our preference when the aim is a slower half-day beside the water. Bring drinking water, sun protection and something warm for after the swim. Access arrangements and day-visitor charges can change, so check the City of Cape Town's Miller's Point information before setting out.

Choose Miller's Point when you want

  • a scenic, less urban setting;
  • time for a picnic or relaxed coastal afternoon;
  • to combine the swim with the drive towards Cape Point; or
  • photography and False Bay views as much as swimming.

Glencairn tidal pool

Glencairn tidal pool is at Glencairn Beach on the False Bay route between Fish Hoek and Simon's Town. It is the more convenient option for a shorter swim and works well as part of a day that also includes Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek or the historic centre of Simon's Town.

The pool is exposed to the coast, and conditions can feel very different from one day to the next. An early visit is often calmer and quieter. The City lists Glencairn among Cape Town's public tidal pools.

Choose Glencairn when you want

  • an accessible stop on the False Bay coastal road;
  • a shorter swim rather than a full-day outing;
  • to pair the pool with Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay or Simon's Town; or
  • a sunrise or early-morning coastal walk.

Which tidal pool is better?

For atmosphere and a sense of escape, choose Miller's Point. For convenience and an easy addition to a broader False Bay itinerary, choose Glencairn. Travellers staying several nights in Simon's Town can comfortably experience both: Glencairn on a town-and-coast day, and Miller's Point on the way to or from Cape Point.

Water quality and safe swimming

The City of Cape Town's 2025 coastal water-quality report recorded 100% compliance for both Glencairn and Miller's Point tidal pools during the reported sampling period. Conditions are not static, however. Check the City's latest coastal information after heavy rain, and make your own assessment when you arrive.

  • Never assume that a tidal pool is supervised.
  • Avoid slippery edges and do not climb exposed rocks in rough seas.
  • Keep children within arm's reach; conditions outside the wall are ocean conditions.
  • Protect valuables and avoid leaving possessions unattended.
  • Pack out everything you bring and do not disturb marine life.
