Seven Beaches in Simon's Town for Swimming and Exploring
Compare seven beaches in Simon's Town for swimming, families, snorkelling, scenery and penguin viewing, with practical local advice.
Last reviewed: July 2026
The beaches in Simon's Town range from sheltered family coves to rocky snorkelling spots and broad stretches of False Bay shoreline. Each has a different character, and the best choice depends on the wind, tide, parking and how you want to spend the day.
1. Boulders Beach
Boulders Beach is known for its granite formations, sheltered water and occasional penguin visitors. Access is controlled as part of Table Mountain National Park, and the swimming cove is separate from the main Foxy Beach penguin boardwalk. Capacity and parking are limited during busy summer periods, so arrive early and check current SANParks fees.
2. Seaforth Beach
Seaforth is a compact sandy beach near the Boulders area and Simon's Town waterfront. Its position can offer protection from some winds, making it popular with families. Conditions still vary, and swimmers should remain alert to rocks, kelp and changing water movement. The surrounding precinct is convenient for refreshments, but restaurant hours should be confirmed directly.
3. Water's Edge Beach
Water's Edge is a small, secluded cove reached through a residential access point. Granite rocks frame clear water that can be attractive for a quiet swim or snorkel in suitable conditions. Space is limited and there are few facilities, so visit considerately, keep noise down and take everything away with you.
4. Windmill Beach
Windmill Beach is a favourite with local swimmers, divers and snorkellers. Its small coves and boulders can provide calmer pockets of water, while the kelp forest supports varied marine life. Visibility and currents change with the weather. Use appropriate equipment and never snorkel alone in unfamiliar conditions.
5. Fisherman's Beach
Fisherman's Beach is a modest neighbourhood beach with sand, rocks and views across False Bay. It suits a short shoreline walk, a picnic or a swim when conditions are settled. Parking is limited, and there may be no lifeguard on duty, so avoid presenting it as universally safe for swimming.
6. Long Beach
Long Beach lies closer to central Simon's Town and offers a longer shoreline for walking, paddling and watching harbour activity. It is more exposed than the sheltered coves and can collect kelp after strong weather. Check water quality notices and local conditions before entering the sea.
7. Miller's Point
Miller's Point is better described as a coastal recreation area than a single beach. It includes picnic spaces, tidal pools, rocky shoreline and a busy boat-launch facility. It is a useful stop for families and coastal views, but visitors must remain alert around vehicles, trailers, slippery rocks and active launch areas.
Choosing the best beach for the day
- For penguin viewing: use the Foxy Beach boardwalk at Boulders.
- For sheltered coves: consider Boulders, Seaforth or Water's Edge when conditions suit.
- For snorkelling: Windmill Beach can be rewarding in calm, clear weather.
- For walking: Long Beach provides more shoreline than the smaller coves.
- For tidal pools and picnics: Miller's Point is the most varied recreation area.
Practical beach advice
False Bay water remains cool, even in summer. Bring sun protection, drinking water and a warm layer. Check wind, swell and tide information before leaving, and do not assume that an unsupervised beach is safe. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife, avoid single-use litter and never feed penguins or baboons.
