The waterfall is seasonal. After dry weather, the rock setting and views across Simon's Town can be more impressive than the flow itself. Wear shoes with grip, avoid slippery rock and turn back if cloud, wind or rain makes the route uncomfortable.

Elsie's Peak is a popular ridge walk north of Simon's Town, with elevated views over Fish Hoek, Glencairn and False Bay. Several access points and route variations are used, which makes a current map more valuable than a single set of casual directions.

Short walks inside the Cape of Good Hope reserve

The Cape Point area offers short coastal walks as well as the famous viewpoints. The official Cape Point guide highlights routes around the lighthouse, the Cape of Good Hope and Kanonkop. These walks combine fynbos, wildlife and wide ocean views, but remain exposed to sun and wind.

Lighthouse walks: begin near the main Cape Point parking area and can be combined with the funicular.

The Cape of Good Hope overnight trail

Experienced walkers can consider SANParks' Cape of Good Hope Hiking Trail, a two-day circular route of approximately 33.8 kilometres beginning and ending at the reserve entrance. It requires advance planning, a minimum of two hikers and overnight accommodation.

How to choose the right walk

One to two hours: consider Admiral's Waterfall, allowing additional time for photography and the return.
A clear half-day: choose a mapped Elsie's Peak route or a marked Cape Point walk.
A full day in the reserve: combine one Cape Point trail with scenic stops rather than attempting several long routes.
Two days: only experienced and properly equipped hikers should consider the booked overnight trail.

Essential hiking precautions

Check the forecast and official closure notices on the morning of the walk.
Do not hike alone, particularly on quieter mountain routes.
Carry water, food, sunblock, a hat and a warm or waterproof layer.
