Cape Point Scenic Route: Ostrich Farm, Scone Shack and Stops

The road south from Simon's Town to Cape Point is one of the Cape Peninsula's most memorable drives. It passes sheltered False Bay coves, fynbos-covered slopes and small farms before reaching the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park.

A good route is not simply about reaching the lighthouse. With an early start, the Cape Point Ostrich Farm, the reserve itself and the Scone Shack can become a relaxed full-day journey rather than three hurried stops.

Before leaving Simon's Town

Check the weather, current SANParks gate hours and conservation fees before departure. Mobile reception becomes unreliable in parts of the reserve, so download your map and any booking information in advance. Carry water, sun protection and a warm layer even on a clear summer morning.

Our preferred approach is to leave after breakfast and keep Boulders Beach for a separate early-morning visit. That gives Cape Point the time it deserves.

Optional first stop: Miller's Point

Stop one: Cape Point Ostrich Farm

The Cape Point Ostrich Farm is on the M65, approximately 400 metres before the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope reserve. It is a working breeding farm rather than a roadside photo stop. Guided visits explain the ostrich life cycle, and the property also has a restaurant and shops specialising in eggs and leather goods.

Allow enough time to enjoy the farm without compromising the reserve visit. Opening arrangements, restaurant days and tour times can change, so confirm directly before travelling.

Stop two: Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

Once inside the reserve, resist the temptation to drive directly to the main parking area and leave immediately after seeing the lighthouse. The reserve's landscapes, beaches, wildlife and short walks are the greater experience.

A practical order inside the reserve

1. Drive to the Cape Point parking area.
2. Walk or take the Flying Dutchman funicular towards the old lighthouse.
3. If conditions permit, use one of the marked paths for wider coastal views.
4. Continue to the Cape of Good Hope viewpoint and sign.
5. Leave time for Buffels Bay, a picnic area or another short walk.

Stop three: the Scone Shack

The Scone Shack is a rustic farm stop at Lalaphanzi Farm on Plateau Road. It is known for freshly baked scones, tea and a peaceful garden setting that feels entirely removed from central Cape Town.

It operates on a limited weekly schedule rather than standard seven-day restaurant hours. Confirm that it is open before designing the day around it. On an operating day, it works particularly well after the reserve, when a pot of tea and something warm are more appealing than another formal attraction.

Should you return through Simon's Town or complete the peninsula loop?

The direct return through Simon's Town is the sensible choice after a long hike, poor weather or a late departure from the reserve. A longer loop through Scarborough, Misty Cliffs, Kommetjie and Noordhoek is rewarding when daylight and energy allow, but it turns the outing into a considerably longer driving day.

For guests staying in Simon's Town, there is no need to force the full loop into a single day. Returning along False Bay keeps the pace comfortable and leaves the Atlantic side for another excursion.

Wildlife and road etiquette

• Never feed baboons, ostriches or other wildlife.
• Keep windows closed around baboons and do not display food.
• Drive slowly; animals can appear close to the road.
• Do not leave food or belongings unattended at viewpoints.
• Remain on marked routes and follow SANParks instructions.
