Sea Point Pavilion: How to Plan a Lap Swim

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Check public lap availability, Monday opening hours, card entry and an indoor alternative before making Sea Point Pavilion part of your holiday.

Sea Point Pavilion has an outdoor 50-metre saltwater pool and separate pools for younger swimmers. It suits a holiday swim if the main pool is available at the time you want. If you need a dedicated lap lane, ask the City facility staff about the current setup before leaving. Public opening hours tell you when the complex admits visitors. They give no information about how much space is set aside for lengths.

Check the main pool before planning a lap session

A swimmer asked whether Sea Point Pavilion has lanes for swimming lengths, and whether another public pool might suit exercise. The City of Cape Town facility page confirms the size of the main pool and lists exercise as a use. It gives no public timetable for dedicated lap lanes. If your swim depends on lane space, check the specific date and time. Ask whether the main pool is operating, whether any lanes are available to the public, and whether a session or event changes that arrangement.

If you are happy to have a short recreational swim, the decision is easier. Check the facility is open and follow the signs and staff directions about which area you can use. A swimmer who wants to cover a set distance can check again at the gate before paying. Ask the pool staff where length swimmers should go and what rules they apply that day.

For a weekday visit, compare two windows that actually fit your plans, such as before breakfast and before a late lunch. Ask staff which has public lap space on the date you want. Opening first thing may sound convenient, but a later session with confirmed space can make better use of a holiday morning. If you are visiting for several days, keep the swim movable until you have checked the conditions at the outdoor complex.

Know the Monday hours and bring a payment card

The City lists the following opening hours for Sea Point Pavilion, on Lower Beach Road. Check its page before travelling for changes or temporary maintenance.

  • Monday: 12:00 to 19:00.
  • Tuesday to Sunday: 07:00 to 19:00. The City includes public holidays in this line of its schedule. Confirm the arrangement if your holiday falls on a Monday.

The facility is cashless and the City says it accepts card payments only. At the time of checking, the facility page showed a standard single entry of R39 for ages 16 and above and R23 for ages three to 15. Check the current tariff and the entry category for the people travelling with you. If some in the group plan to watch from the lawn, ask about spectator admission before working out the total.

Set aside time to get through the entrance, change and rinse off afterwards. The City lists showers, change rooms, kiosks and a grassed area. If you need a locker, a step-free route to a particular pool, or accessible changing facilities, ask what is available before going. The facility's general access listing gives no guarantee that a particular route or amenity will suit everyone.

Choose a pool for your group

The City lists four pools at the complex: the main 50-metre pool, a separate diving pool, a fun pool and a kiddies' pool. For a family outing, check which of those spaces are open. If one adult wants to swim lengths, plan when the adults will swap and who will be supervising the children. Follow the facility rules and lifeguards’ directions about the right pool for your group.

Make a plan that works if the lane is unavailable

If you need to swim lengths and the Pavilion cannot confirm space, check the Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool in the City Bowl. The City lists a 25-metre main pool there and reserves part of Tuesday for women only, with a shorter reserved period in school holidays and an exception for public holidays. Check access hours and lane availability separately for that pool. It is a useful alternative for a visitor who wants an indoor setting or has a morning free while Sea Point is closed.

If the swim is one part of a holiday morning, keep a second plan in the neighbourhood. A promenade walk and breakfast can fill the time if a pool closes or the session is too busy for lengths. A visitor considering a Sea Point stay asked about being able to step out for a morning stroll or swim. The Pavilion can fit that kind of trip. For Monday, plan around the later opening and use the morning for the promenade. For another weekday, allow time after the pool for breakfast before you book your next activity.

If you are still choosing a place to stay on the Atlantic side, see our Sea Point versus Camps Bay guide for how each neighbourhood fits a wider Cape Town trip. For a separate Cape Peninsula stay with travellers aged 12 and over, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town.
