Pretoria Botanical Garden Picnic or Braai Planning

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan a packed picnic or booked Eziko braai at Pretoria National Botanical Garden, with SANBI entry details and a separate Dassie Trail option.

For a Pretoria National Botanical Garden picnic, plan ordinary garden entry and pick a place to sit after a short walk. If you want to cook, arrange the separate Eziko braai area in advance. The garden's general picnic rules allow a packed meal but prohibit fires in the ordinary grounds.

The garden is in Brummeria, east of central Pretoria. A visitor unfamiliar with the city asked whether the botanical garden would suit a quiet picnic date with a view. A second local discussion about less crowded picnic places also mentions the garden. The best plan depends on whether you want a simple lunch, a reserved group space or time on the ridge before eating.

Pick the right type of picnic

Plan What to arrange Where to check
Packed lunch for a small group Ordinary entry and a permitted picnic spot Garden rules and any event notice
Charcoal braai Separate Eziko arrangements SANBI's braai-area booking contact
Reserved lapa or organised gathering Capacity, booking fee and setup requirements The venue or braai team, depending on the booking

For an ordinary visit, bring a meal that is easy to carry and serve. A blanket and a compact bag leave your choice of walking route open. If you need a seat with a back, an accessible toilet or a picnic space near the entrance, ask garden staff to point out the current options. A quiet atmosphere and a particular seat depend on the day, especially when the garden is hosting an event.

The garden rules welcome picnics and birdwatching. They prohibit general fires, braais, cycling, swimming and collecting plants or animals. Keep to the garden's permitted areas and take your packaging away when you leave. If you are planning a celebration with equipment or a formal shoot, check the separate venue or photography arrangements before inviting the group.

Use Eziko if cooking is part of the plan

SANBI's visitor information describes an exception for the dedicated Eziko area. It lists a R120 entrance fee that includes garden admission, with separate charges for booked lapas. SANBI says to use charcoal in this area and excludes firewood. Confirm the applicable charge, booking and equipment rules before buying supplies.

Decide whether you need a covered space or only a spot in the braai area. The published list distinguishes the small lapa, described for five people, from the two larger ones listed for up to 30. Ask whether the entry payment is per person, what the group owes separately for the lapa and when the reservation is secured. Do this through the current contact shown on the visitor page so everyone has the same instructions.

If part of the group plans to walk first, choose a meeting point and an approximate lunch time. People carrying coolers or cooking supplies may want to go directly to the agreed area while others explore. Ask the venue team where to meet and whether any extra equipment requires permission.

Decide whether the ridge belongs in your visit

The quartzite ridge divides the garden into two sections. SANBI's Dassie Trail description puts the start at the waterfall near the Tea Garden and describes about an hour on paved paths through natural Bankenveld vegetation. Its numbered viewpoints and benches make a good reason to walk before lunch when the trail is open and the group has time.

A paved trail still has terrain to consider. SANBI lists the ridge paths, Succulent Garden and Cycad Garden as exceptions to its general description of wheelchair-accessible paths. Ask about gradients and the current route to the lower sections if that affects your visit. SANBI also identifies the Enabling Garden near the entrance and adapted toilets at several facilities. Check the specific route and facility you plan to use.

Check admission and give the walk its own time

The current SANBI visitor page lists 08:00 to 18:00 daily, with no entry after 17:00, and cashless payment. It lists adult entry at R100 from September to March and R80 from April to August. Check the page again for your visit date and confirm whether a special event changes the normal access arrangements. Use the visitor entrance at 2 Cussonia Avenue in Brummeria.

If you are visiting in summer, SANBI describes thunderstorms as typical of the season. Keep the food and the walk flexible, and check the forecast before settling on an outdoor lunch. During a winter visit, ask which open parts of the grounds get sun at the time you expect to stop. Decide what you will do if the weather changes before bringing a group together.

For a short afternoon, choose an entrance-area visit and leave ample time to settle down with lunch. If you have more time and want a ridge walk, give it a separate block and come back down before opening the picnic. For a group braai, let the confirmed reservation determine the meeting time. Each plan gives you time for the garden as well as the meal.

If your Gauteng trip also has room for a separate outing beyond Pretoria, consider our Magaliesberg canopy tour planning guide.

If the holiday continues to the Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town for that separate stay. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
