Cape Town's mountain makes its own adventure menu, and three items top it: tandem paragliding off Lion's Head or Signal Hill, a guided abseil down Table Mountain's cliff, and hot-air ballooning at dawn, which happens in the Winelands rather than over the city, for reasons that are not marketing. None require experience; all of them are weather's prisoners. Here is what each involves and who each one suits.

Tandem paragliding: the gentle one

The signature flight: strapped to a qualified tandem pilot, you take a few running steps off the hillside and the city becomes a map beneath you. Launch sites at Lion's Head and Signal Hill serve flights that drift on the sea breeze and land on the fields below, with the whole thing, briefing to touchdown, an unhurried couple of hours. No experience, no fitness beyond the run, and photos included by most operators. The constraint is air: the south-easter grounds everything, so book a flexible window and check the morning's forecast.

Abseiling Table Mountain: the vertical one

Below the cableway's upper station waits one of the highest commercial abseils anywhere: a guided descent down sheer cliff, city and ocean swapped for sheer rock face and long views. No experience needed; the guide rig is everything, and the cable car takes you up so the walk is all descent. Hot-air ballooning: the Winelands one

Balloons do not fly over the city bowl: airspace, mountain winds and landing realities keep them away, which is why the operators launch at dawn over the Winelands instead. It is a lovely trade: vineyards, peaks and morning mist below, a coffee-fuelled inflate as the sun comes up, and the wine-route lunch that follows practically books itself. Count on an early start from the city and treat the drive as part of the day.

Choosing your altitude

Paragliding is the softest entry and the cheapest thrill-per-hour; abseiling is the biggest story to tell; ballooning is the slow, expensive, unforgettable one that turns a morning into a memory. Families should check operator minimum ages and weight windows, which vary and are enforced for safety, not fussiness.
