What is the Cape of Good Hope?

The Cape of Good Hope is the rocky promontory that gave this part of the park its name. Bartolomeu Dias called it the Cape of Storms in 1488, and Portugal's King John II later gave it the more hopeful name. Visitors know it for the coastal scenery and the sign marking Africa's most south-western point.

It is not Africa's southernmost point. That distinction belongs to Cape Agulhas, farther east.

What is Cape Point?

Cape Point is the high headland crowned by two historic lighthouses. The original lighthouse was completed in 1859, but its elevated position was often obscured by cloud, so a lower lighthouse was later built. The Flying Dutchman funicular normally links the main car park with the upper station below the old lighthouse. Do the two oceans really meet here?

Not as a fixed line you can photograph. The recognised meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans is Cape Agulhas. Which should you prioritise with limited time?

You do not really have to choose, because one entrance ticket covers the whole reserve.
