OR Tambo to Pretoria by Gautrain or Direct Transfer

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan the train from OR Tambo to Pretoria or Hatfield, including the change, contactless payment and when a direct transfer may suit you better.

You can take Gautrain from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria or Hatfield with a change from the airport service to the northbound commuter train. Use the journey planner to confirm the interchange for your departure. If you arrive after the final useful connection, have heavy bags or need a second car ride from the station, compare a direct transfer before deciding.

A visitor travelling from the airport to Pretoria asked how the train worked and later said they had chosen a car because of their luggage. The useful comparison is the full trip to your accommodation: a station change, the last stretch from the station, and the time when you are likely to reach the platform.

Start with the destination address

Ask the accommodation for its full address and the most practical station for that address. Pretoria station and Hatfield station are distinct stops. Hatfield is east of the Pretoria city centre. A hotel described as being in Pretoria can be some distance from either station, so plan the final leg before paying for the rail journey.

If you are considering a connecting bus, check the operator's route list for the actual stop, schedule and payment rules. Hatfield has published routes towards areas such as Brooklyn, Lynnwood and Menlyn. Check whether the right route operates when you arrive. Some local services have separate payment arrangements. Otherwise agree on a collection point with your accommodation or transfer provider.

Make the change within the Gautrain network

  1. At the airport, follow the train signs to the Gautrain station. Use Airports Company South Africa's terminal maps or ask airport staff if you arrive in an unfamiliar terminal.
  2. In the Gautrain journey planner, choose OR Tambo as your origin and Pretoria or Hatfield as the destination. Enter a time that allows for the airport formalities and collecting your luggage.
  3. Board the airport service. Marlboro is the usual interchange for a Hatfield-bound train from the airport, as shown on the Gautrain Management Agency network map. Follow the journey planner and station signs for the actual change and platform on your day.
  4. Leave the train at the station you selected and continue by the confirmed bus, collection or road transfer.

Gautrain's operator information distinguishes the airport service, which connects OR Tambo with Marlboro and Sandton, from the north-south commuter service that continues to Pretoria and Hatfield. Ask station staff if an announcement or the display differs from your saved itinerary. Use the direction and stop list for the service that is running.

Use one payment method per traveller

The operator says each passenger requires a Gautrain Card or their own eligible contactless bank card. Use the same card to enter and leave the rail network. If you are travelling together, agree on how each paying passenger will get through the gate. A physical bank card used at entry should also be available at exit.

Use the fare shown for your own station pair and expected travel time. The operator describes fares as dependent on both. If you need to buy a Gautrain Card, ask for the current cost and how much value to load for the full airport journey. Compare the party's total rail fares and final transfer with the price of a car from the airport door.

Check the last useful connection before leaving the terminal

Check both trains, including the last northbound departure you can connect to. Published general operating hours differ between the rail operator and the airport website. Use Gautrain's dated departure planner or ask the station for the actual trip. Check again if your flight arrives late or the service is disrupted.

Think about what you can manage between platforms and from the final station. Gautrain's travel rules ask passengers to look after their own luggage and keep access routes clear. If you have bulky bags, a pushchair or specific boarding needs, ask about the exact arrangements for both services and your interchange. For an arranged driver, confirm that the vehicle can take everyone and their bags in one trip.

When a direct transfer is the simpler booking

For a solo traveller staying near Hatfield, compare one rail fare and a short onward trip with a door-to-door quote. For four travellers, compare all four train fares and the final transfer against one vehicle large enough for the group and its luggage. The cheaper arrangement can change with group size.

A confirmed pickup can be useful for a late arrival or a hotel far from a station. Ask for the exact meeting point and the fare for the complete journey. Airports Company South Africa's transport information directs travellers to its terminal information desk for accredited taxi options. If your hotel is organising collection, ask how to contact the driver if you are delayed or the meeting point changes.

For the return to OR Tambo, reverse the planning exercise. Start with when the airline wants you at the terminal, then allow for the drive to the station, the change and any wait for the airport service. When those margins are tight, a confirmed direct pickup is worth comparing.

If Johannesburg is an interchange on a longer overland holiday, our Cape Town to Johannesburg overnight coach guide covers a separate intercity leg.

If the holiday also includes Cape Town, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town for a separate Cape Peninsula stay. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
