Mopani Rest Camp: Phalaborwa or Punda Maria Gate?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Choose an entrance for Mopani Rest Camp after checking the whole route. Compare Phalaborwa and Punda Maria, road notices and camp gate timing.

Phalaborwa is the usual gate to investigate for Mopani Rest Camp. Punda Maria is the northern alternative. Confirm the whole route with South African National Parks before deciding which gate to use. An open entrance and an open rest camp can still be separated by a closed or restricted road.

A traveller planning a stay at Mopani after flooding asked whether the Phalaborwa route had reopened or whether they needed to enter through Punda Maria. That is the right question to ask before booking accommodation outside the park for the night before. The usual route is a starting point for planning. What matters is what park staff confirm for the day you will use it.

Use the normal times to compare both approaches

The SANParks travel-time table gives approximate minimum in-park times to Mopani of two hours and 15 minutes from Phalaborwa and two hours and 45 minutes from Punda Maria. These figures assume the shortest routes are available and do not include stops. The separate SANParks directions page allows about three hours for the usual Phalaborwa route. Plan with the longer figure in mind and ask staff to estimate the route they actually expect you to use.

Include the drive before the gate. If you come from the Polokwane and Tzaneen side, SANParks identifies the approach toward Phalaborwa. Punda Maria may look only half an hour farther away on the camp travel table, but that comparison starts at each gate. The full journey to Punda Maria could take a different amount of time depending on your overnight base.

Write down two separate totals for each option. The first is from your accommodation or starting point to the entrance, with a break and gate registration allowed for. The second is from the entrance to camp, with time for slower traffic or stops. Compare the complete trips before choosing where to sleep outside Kruger.

Ask about the road, the gate and the camp separately

In its 30 January 2026 access update, SANParks said Mopani was open while access to the camp was restricted to Punda Maria. That was a dated restriction after severe weather. It shows how the gates and camp can have different statuses. Consult Kruger’s current SANParks notices and confirm with the camp or gate as well.

Tell staff your date, direction and booking, then ask whether the H14 route is open all the way to Mopani. If it is unavailable, ask whether SANParks is directing visitors from Phalaborwa by another park route or recommending Punda Maria. Record the route staff give you, the vehicle requirements and any timing restrictions. Avoid using an old map as evidence of current through access.

Keep the Letaba stop separate from the decision about reaching Mopani. A 7 September 2026 SANParks update reported the restored Letaba high-level bridge and 25 restored accommodation units. It anticipated further phased work, which is a good reason to verify any specific Letaba booking or stop. It did not establish today’s access to Mopani via the H14.

Give yourself time to reach the camp gate

If you plan to visit Mopani for the day, confirm how much time you will have to drive back out. The two published minimums would imply four and a half hours of in-park driving on a Phalaborwa round trip, or five and a half from Punda Maria, before gate procedures, stops and any detours. A day-visitor ticket has a different return deadline from a camp reservation. If you want a substantial dam or picnic stop, check whether an overnight at the camp better fits the time you have.

The SANParks entrance-gate page distinguishes park entrance and camp gate times. Work backward from the latter using the actual route. For example, if staff advise allowing three hours after you enter and you want a further half-hour of margin, plan to finish registration at least three and a half hours before the camp gate closes. Add the journey to the entrance separately.

If the margin is too small, an overnight near the confirmed entrance may make more sense than arriving late and expecting to drive straight to camp. Ask SANParks what options exist before changing a reservation. A new gate can change where you would buy food, where you refuel and how early you need to leave.

Keep arrival day flexible and plan Mopani from camp

SANParks describes Mopani Rest Camp on Pioneer Dam, with a day-visitor area and a separate bird hide outside the camp. Verify current camp services and hide access before counting on them. Plan supplies around what is confirmed, and save a longer outing for the following day if the arrival journey takes most of the afternoon.

If you are also planning Punda Maria, Shingwedzi or Pafuri as destinations, our northern Kruger itinerary guide covers allocating nights farther north. For the Mopani arrival, make the decision from the confirmed gate-to-camp connection first. If your South Africa holiday later includes the Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon’s Town for guests aged 12 and over.
