What Is Load Shedding (and Will It Affect Your Cape Town Stay)?

Load shedding means scheduled electricity rationing when supply cannot meet demand. It is different from a local fault or planned maintenance. For a Cape Town holiday, check the notice that applies to your accommodation's address, then ask which facilities will remain available. An old national warning cannot tell you whether your particular evening will be affected.

A current notice for 10-11 October

The City of Cape Town has announced infrastructure work from 20:00 on Saturday 10 October until 06:00 on Sunday 11 October 2026, if work proceeds as planned. Its notice includes Simon's Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, Muizenberg and surrounding areas. The City cautions that the map is indicative: some listed areas might retain supply and some outside the map might experience interruptions.

This is a planned maintenance interruption. Check the City's official notice and outage map for updates. The earlier September work was postponed and incorporated into this October maintenance. Ask your host about your specific address before making evening arrangements.

Three different reasons the lights can go out

A national load-shedding announcement concerns electricity supply and demand. A maintenance notice concerns work on a particular network. A fault is an unexpected problem. These can all interrupt a traveller's day, but they have different sources of information and different recovery times. Eskom's official explanation distinguishes the three.

For scheduled maintenance, read the affected area and start and end times. For a fault, ask whether the supplier has acknowledged it and whether there is a restoration estimate. For national rationing, check the applicable supplier's current status and address-based schedule. Do not use a screenshot from another suburb as your own timetable.

What to ask before checking in

The useful question is not simply whether a property has backup power. Ask what it supplies, for how long, and whether there are limits during a prolonged interruption. A small battery powering a router provides a different service from a generator supplying larger circuits. Neither description alone confirms every socket or appliance will operate.

Tell your host which facilities matter to you: lighting, phone charging, internet, hot water or a particular appliance. Ask separately about entrance gates and arrival instructions if you will check in during an announced outage. Request the practical arrangement rather than assuming normal service from a broad amenity label.

Arriving during an evening interruption

Save the address, entrance instructions and contact number before leaving the airport or your previous accommodation. Download your route while connected. Let your host know your expected arrival time so you can agree how to reach the entrance if your phone signal or navigation becomes unreliable.

A confirmed restaurant booking is also worth a direct check. Ask whether the venue will open as planned, whether the menu changes and which payment methods it can accept. Do this before setting out, especially when your meal, transfer and check-in all fall in the same evening.

Allow extra journey time when local traffic signals are affected. Keep the outing straightforward and avoid adding an unfamiliar late-night detour merely to find somewhere with power. Your driver or host can help coordinate the immediate plan using current local information.

A small preparation kit is enough for most visitors

Charge your phone and power bank before a known interruption. Keep a small torch handy and save essential travel information offline. Put your host's number somewhere you can reach without searching an email inbox. These preparations are useful for ordinary travel delays as well as electrical interruptions.

Check that your plug adapter fits the sockets provided at your accommodation. An adapter changes the physical connection, so separately check the electrical rating of anything you plan to use. Ask before plugging a high-demand appliance into a backup circuit.

Follow your host's instructions about appliances during shutdown and restoration. Do not investigate electrical panels, operate unfamiliar equipment or assume that a disconnected installation is safe to touch. A restoration estimate is a planning guide, not a guarantee.

Keep your holiday plan flexible

An overnight maintenance notice does not automatically rule out a daytime visit to Boulders Beach or Cape Point. Check each attraction's operating information separately. The decision is whether your transport, meal and accommodation arrangements work for the affected hours, rather than whether the whole region is available or unavailable.

For a short stay, put the important practical questions into one message to your host. Include your dates, arrival time and facilities you need. That is more useful than checking several unrelated national news reports and trying to infer the effect on one room.
