Kenton-on-Sea or Port Alfred for a Two-Night Coastal Break?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Choose a Sunshine Coast holiday base by comparing Kenton's beaches and river mouths with Port Alfred's Kowie cruises and town stops.

Choose Kenton-on-Sea for two nights if you want your morning to start with a beach walk or time by one of its two river mouths. Choose Port Alfred if you want a Kowie River cruise and a wider choice of town errands or meals between outings. Either base works for a visit to the other. With just two nights, keep one room and spend your time exploring instead of moving your luggage.

Kenton-on-Sea: two river mouths and beaches between them

Ndlambe Municipality places Kenton between the Bushman's and Kariega rivers. Before choosing accommodation, look up which side of town you want to use. A listing near the Kariega River and one across the Bushman's at Boesmansriviermond can both sound like a Kenton beach break, but give you different starting points.

The Kenton tourism beach and river guide identifies Kariega Main Beach at the river end and Middle Beach along the coast. Kariega is a sensible first stop if you want to see the river mouth. Middle Beach gives you another stretch of coastline to explore. If your main aim is a walk, choose one confirmed access point and give it time instead of trying to see every cove. Ask locally about tide-dependent access before heading to Shelly Bay or other routes around rocks.

For a trip based on the river, distinguish a beach visit from a boat booking. The local tourism guide lists cruise providers for the Kariega and Bushman's rivers. Check which river your operator uses, where you meet and what happens if conditions change. If you want a simpler morning, plan a beach walk and a meal in town without promising the group a water activity.

Port Alfred: use the Kowie River as your anchor

The Port Alfred tourism beach guide distinguishes East Beach and West Beach on opposite sides of the Kowie mouth. East Beach offers a long stretch for walking. The tourism guide warns about strong rip currents at West Beach and advises against choosing it for swimming. Treat each beach and river mouth as a separate access decision. Check current signs, water conditions and where lifeguards are operating before planning to enter the water.

For something with a set start, Integrity River Cruises publishes one- and two-hour river trips from F Jetty at the Small Boat Harbour. Ask for your actual departure, current price and boarding arrangements. Other operators can depart elsewhere, so use the directions for your booking. If a short river trip is your priority, staying in Port Alfred gives you more time to fit it around a meal or a beach walk.

Give the two nights a plan that can change

Arrival afternoon: Check in and explore near your base. From Kenton, choose one river or beach approach. From Port Alfred, orient yourself around the Kowie and confirm the location of any booked departure. Keep the second town for your full day or your onward drive.

Your full day: Pick the beach morning or a confirmed cruise as the anchor. Use the rest of the day for lunch and a short second stop. If wind or rain changes the plan, ask about a Bathurst museum visit. Port Alfred Tourism's Bathurst listing places the Kowie Museum at the Bathurst Agricultural Museum since September 2024 and says the Kowie collection opens on request. Confirm separately before driving over. Older visitor information still points to the former railway station in Port Alfred.

Departure morning: Fit in one last view or breakfast near your room. If you are travelling from Addo towards the Garden Route, check whether you want to detour east before turning back west. If time is tight and your next stop is Plettenberg Bay, a city outing on your onward route may fit better. Our Donkin Heritage guide covers a separate Gqeberha visit.
