Johannesburg Red Bus: Where to Board and Where to Stop

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Start at Rosebank or Constitution Hill, read the 2026–27 Red Bus timetable and pick a history stop that leaves time for the return.

For a first Johannesburg hop-on hop-off bus trip, start at The Zone in Rosebank. City Sightseeing's tour office is its main boarding point, near Rosebank Gautrain station. If you are already in Braamfontein and want to visit Constitution Hill, you can start there instead. Before choosing the second option, check where the bus will leave you at the end of the day.

Where to board the Johannesburg Red Bus

The Rosebank tour office is in The Zone shopping centre's pedestrian area. The one-day ticket page directs rail passengers to use the station's north exit and asks visitors to arrive 15 minutes before departure. Follow the operator's pin for the tour office, as a pin for Rosebank in general can put you on the wrong side of the centre. Save your confirmation on your phone before leaving your accommodation.

A traveller who had already bought a one-day ticket asked where the stations were and which one made sense near the city centre. The distinction is that the sightseeing bus has designated roadside stops and a main tour office. Check the stop name, number and direction on the date-specific timetable, particularly if a map or guide from a previous year gives a different number.

Constitution Hill is a practical alternative when it is already your first stop. The 2026–27 operator timetable shows Constitution Hill as stop 5, followed by stops including the Mining District and the Apartheid Museum. Rosebank is the scheduled end of the loop. If you parked at Constitution Hill or need to return to Braamfontein, check whether you can make the onward connection from Rosebank or arrange another way back.

Read the current timetable from the stop you will use

The current schedule page links a single Red Tour timetable. It shows a first departure from Rosebank at 09:00, departures at 40-minute intervals and a last Rosebank departure at 15:00. It lists the final return to Rosebank at 17:32. The operator can change or cancel services, so check the same sheet for your date and use its live tracker for the current position.

Read across the row for your stop. The last bus out of Rosebank is not the last departure from each attraction. Equally, a late bus from a stop can finish in Rosebank without continuing around the loop to where you parked. If you have a fixed commitment after the tour, plan around the second-to-last usable departure and ask the operator where to wait before you get off.

The operator describes the ride without stops as about two and a half hours. A sightseeing stop adds the time inside the venue and the wait to reboard. A one-hour museum tour can take substantially longer out of your day once you include admission, a walk to the pickup point and the next bus. The one-day ticket covers the bus loop. Budget separately for attractions and keep the same boarding pass handy when you rejoin.

Build the day around one history stop

Choose Constitution Hill if you want a guided visit to a former prison precinct and the site of South Africa's Constitutional Court. Its own visitor schedule lists a one-hour Highlights tour and two-hour Full tours at specific times. Allow time to reach the visitor centre and buy or present your separate admission ticket. If the full tour is the point of the day, work backwards from that departure instead of assuming the bus will deliver you at a convenient moment.

Choose the Apartheid Museum if you want the day to focus on the history of apartheid and the struggle against it. The museum's own visitor page suggests allowing two hours even for a brief visit through the exhibitions. It currently lists Tuesday to Sunday opening, while older bus-route copy says it is closed on Tuesday. The museum has announced that it will close on Wednesday 4 November 2026 for municipal elections. Check the museum for other exceptions and the operator for the bus stop separately. A bus passing the site cannot tell you whether the exhibitions are open.

With a full day, begin early and consider a second visit only once you have matched both venues' hours and return pickups. With half a day, take the full loop without getting off or choose one destination and arrange the return deliberately. A Soweto extension is a separate product decision with its own pickup, duration and return. Check whether it is included on your ticket before using it as a stop in your day plan.

Think twice about adding the bus to an airport layover

A traveller with a nine-hour O.R. Tambo connection asked whether there was enough time for a tour. The gap between flights includes getting out of the airport and getting back for the onward flight. Confirm with your airline and the relevant authorities whether you can leave, what happens to your baggage and when you must return. Use the Gautrain journey planner for both legs if taking the train, then compare the usable time with the full bus loop and the actual departure. If the schedule depends on catching every connection, choose a shorter outing or stay at the airport.

If choosing between the two is the main decision, our Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill comparison goes into the venues themselves.

If your wider holiday includes the Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra's direct availability in Simon's Town for that separate stage. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
