Intaka Island Birdwatching and Boat Rides in Cape Town

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan a visit to Intaka Island in Century City. Choose a birdwatching walk, reserve a canal boat ride and use the sanctuary's current cashless prices.

Go to Intaka Island for the bird hides and wetland paths, then add the 30-minute canal boat ride if you want a different view of Century City. You can walk in for ordinary admission. The sanctuary asks you to book the boat, even when you are enquiring on the same day.

Start with the hides if birds are the reason you are going

Intaka Island is a wetland and bird sanctuary surrounded by the Century City canals. The Cape Bird Club's site guide describes two bird hides, seasonal pans and a section of constructed wetland that includes reedbeds and a lake. The two settings are worth looking at separately. A bird in open water is easier to see than one moving just inside the reeds, so pause before moving on.

Bring binoculars if you have them. A first visit can be as simple as choosing one hide, watching the water edge and comparing what you see with a field guide. The Bird Club records species including Yellow-billed Duck, Red-knobbed Coot and kingfishers at Intaka. Sightings change with water levels, season and the birds' movements. The yellow-billed duck in the lead photo was documented at the reserve in January 2025.

Ask reception which paths and hides are open. If you prefer an introduction to how the wetland works, ask about a guided walk. A self-guided visit gives you more freedom to spend extra time in a hide. Keep voices low and follow the marked paths.

Book the boat if you want time on the canals

The sanctuary's visitor page puts the boat departure at 2 Park Lane, Century City. It lists rides during a 09:30 to 15:30 window Monday to Thursday and on weekends, and 09:30 to 14:00 on Fridays. Ask for an actual available departure and the check-in time. These are service windows, and a boat does not depart every time within them.

If you are fitting the visit around a meal or another booking, reserve the boat first and allow time for a walk before or after. The visitor page says Intaka does not offer canoeing. The sanctuary boat is a different activity from independently hiring a kayak elsewhere on the Century City waterways.

Intaka describes a 1 km wheelchair-friendly circular route and says it can accommodate people with disabilities on its boats. The walking route, getting into a hide and boarding the boat are separate access questions. Ask staff about the exact boarding arrangements and path surfaces if those affect your plans.

Use the sanctuary's current cashless price list

At review on 3 November 2026, Intaka Island's own price list published the following per-person rates. Its age categories are 12 and older for the adult rate, 3 to 11 for children, and 60 and older for pensioners.

Visit option Adult Child or pensioner
Entrance only R37 R23
Entrance and guided walk R47 R37
Entrance and boat ride R105 R95
Entrance, boat and guided walk R116 R106

The price list states that cash payments ended on 1 January 2026. Check the current page before travelling and ask reception about any age category or requirement the table does not cover. Other precinct pages and older FAQ prices can differ.

Plan the rest of the outing around your arrival

The sanctuary lists daily opening from 07:30 to 19:00 from October to April and 07:30 to 17:30 from May to September. It closes on Christmas Day. The boat schedule is shorter than the sanctuary hours, so an early or late walk does not automatically include a ride. Confirm the current details with reception on 021 552 6889.

Bring a snack if you plan to spend time at the hides. Intaka says it has no restaurant, and visitors may bring food for the picnic area. Pets and bicycles are excluded from the island. If your trip also includes a distinct seabird conservation or Table Bay outing, see our guide to SANCCOB, the Rietvlei area and Bloubergstrand.

For the Cape Peninsula part of your holiday, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
