Greyton to McGregor: Plan the Boesmanskloof Hike

Plan a one-way Boesmanskloof hike or an overnight return between the Greyton side and Die Galg, with a permit, transport and a village fallback.
The Boesmanskloof Trail connects the Greyton side of the Riviersonderend Mountains with Die Galg, south of McGregor. CapeNature lists it at approximately 14 km one way. For a holiday crossing, settle three things before booking the rest of the trip: a confirmed hiking permit, the exact meeting points and a ride on the far side. The McGregor-side finish is outside the village.

Choose one crossing or a return hike
CapeNature's Boesmanskloof route description gives roughly 14 km in either direction. Its route map and brochure shows the return distance as 28 km. The extra 14 km changes the whole holiday. If you cross and come back on foot the next day, plan two mountain days and an overnight on the far side. If you have one hiking day, arrange a confirmed lift, taxi or second vehicle and use the extra time for the two villages.
Choose the direction around where you can sleep and where someone can collect you. For a Greyton start with a McGregor finish, tell your driver the collection point is Die Galg and confirm what it takes to get there. For a McGregor start, work out the morning approach before committing to breakfast or checkout in the village. CapeNature places Die Galg about 14 km south of McGregor. The village name in a booking or map result can send two people to different destinations.
Get the permit and check the route for your date
A traveller planning the same crossing asked whether to set off after a permit request went unanswered. Wait for confirmation. CapeNature's route brochure says hikers need to carry their permit. Start at its hiking permit page and use the official channel for the Boesmanskloof Trail. When enquiring, give the date, group size, direction and whether you intend a one-way or return trip. Ask how the permit should cover both dates if you plan to walk back the next day.
Check trail status again shortly before departure and use the permit confirmation for the applicable access conditions. The authority's current advice determines whether to use the route that day. Check the same way with whoever is meeting you. Changes to the approach road can affect the pickup even when you have already paid for accommodation.
Book the night that suits your route
Staying in a village gives you time to have dinner and see the place before or after the hike. It also adds a separate transfer between the McGregor side and Die Galg. If you want to sleep closer to the trail end, check where the property is relative to your approved route. The Onverwacht accommodation operator lists cottages and Eagle's Nest House outside McGregor. Ask where arrivals meet, what the vehicle approach is like and how to get luggage to the property. Book hiking access and lodging separately.
If the car is staying in Greyton, work the collection into the next day's travel before booking somewhere further east. With two cars, agree who leaves the second car, where it can be parked and how the drivers get back to the departure point. With a hired transfer, share the confirmed pickup point and agree how to handle delays. Keep the map, booking confirmations and driver details available offline.
Keep a village day available
Give a mountain crossing the day instead of trying to fit it before a timed dinner or a long onward drive. Ask CapeNature about conditions and the demands of the trail for your group. Allow time for breaks and take water with you. Waterfalls and streams in old photographs do not establish a reliable supply for a particular date.
If the permit or transfer falls through, keep the accommodation and change the activity. A McGregor day can be as simple as lunch and time in the village. Use our McGregor weekend guide for ideas that don't depend on crossing the mountains. If the group still wants a walk, ask the local tourism office which shorter options are suitable and open on your date.
