Franschhoek Motor Museum: Plan Your First Visit

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan a cashless Franschhoek Motor Museum visit at L'Ormarins. Check the changing displays and the right arrival point before booking.

The Franschhoek Motor Museum makes a good stand-alone stop for anyone who wants a Winelands outing centred on cars. Book the museum first, go to L'Ormarins on the R45 and give yourself time to look around its four halls. Check the display list before promising a particular car to anyone in your group.

Book the visit before leaving Franschhoek

The museum's visitor page directs visitors to online tickets and says it uses cashless payments. Its published hours are 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays with last admittance at 16:00, and 10:00 to 16:00 on weekends and public holidays with last admittance at 15:00. It lists Christmas Day and Good Friday closures. Check for changes when you book. A ticket at the end of the day leaves less time to compare cars or stop at the deli.

Share the exact museum destination at L'Ormarins with anyone joining you. The estate is outside the village and has vehicle restrictions. The museum's home and contact page list different seat thresholds for larger buses. If you're arriving by minibus, coach or motorcycle, confirm the instructions before travel. The museum describes separate parking at Anthonij Rupert for affected vehicles and says to flag the transfer requirement when booking.

Choose a thread through the four halls

The museum describes a collection of more than 220 vehicles, with more than 80 exhibits typically shown in four halls arranged chronologically. Its display page warns that exhibits are being changed. Use the list to pick a period you want to see and ask about a specific vehicle if it will decide whether you go.

You can enjoy the collection without knowing makes or engine sizes. Compare how a driver sat in an early open car with the enclosed cabin of a later one. Notice how lamps, mudguards and luggage space change over time. If you're with children, give each person one feature to spot in two different halls and compare what they find.

For a little reading before you go, the museum has an account of its 1909 Le Zèbre Type A. The maker was French, but the museum identifies the original London registration on its car and explains how some cars sold in England carried the English name Zebra. It makes a good example of what a badge or a plate can tell you about where a car was sold. Check the current display before expecting to see it in person.

Leave room for lunch or village time

The museum lists a deli, so you can ask about food there or keep lunch for the village after the visit. If you're travelling with someone who has mobility requirements, the museum describes itself as wheelchair friendly. Confirm the arrival, parking and hall arrangements for your group in advance. If you're meeting someone who wants a different pace, agree when you'll meet after the halls and keep the next reservation flexible.

A museum morning and a village lunch work as a day on their own. If you're adding a separate estate visit, book it with the relevant operator and allow travel time between the two. Our Winelands guide for non-drinkers gives more ways to spend the afternoon.

Heading to the Cape Peninsula for a separate part of the trip? Aqua Terra in Simon's Town welcomes guests aged 12 and over. Check Aqua Terra availability.
