Your First Kgalagadi Self-Drive: Camps, Routes and Transfers

Build a first Kgalagadi self-drive around confirmed camps, realistic transfers and the right vehicle, with fewer rushed moves between bases.
For a first self-drive visit to Kgalagadi, choose a manageable sequence of confirmed camps before filling the days with game drives. Distances on a map do not explain the time required on the park's gravel roads, and an available bed can become an awkward booking if it forces repeated long transfers.
A useful starting approach is to enter through Twee Rivieren, spend time at one additional main camp if availability and trip length permit, and leave enough time to return to your chosen exit. This is an editorial planning pattern, not a prescribed route. The right version depends on actual reservations, your vehicle and current park conditions.
Build a camp sequence, rather than collecting available nights
Begin with the official accommodation choices and park map. Twee Rivieren is the southern arrival base, Mata-Mata lies beside the Auob riverbed on the western side, and Nossob gives you a different base in the Nossob riverbed. These are destinations to stay and explore from, not quick roadside stops.
On paper, mark each overnight stay and the transfer needed to reach the next one. If you repeatedly cross between river corridors for single nights, consider fewer camps, different dates or a shorter area of exploration. Two consecutive nights at a base give you a full day without packing and relocating.
For example, a first visit could combine a southern arrival night with a few nights at either Mata-Mata or Nossob, then a properly timed return. A longer trip may include both. Treat that as a framework to test against availability, not a reason to reserve widely separated camps before checking the journey between them.
Use park transfer times before ordinary navigation estimates
SANParks publishes indicative internal travelling times: Twee Rivieren to Mata-Mata is three and a half hours, Twee Rivieren to Nossob four and a half hours, and Nossob to Mata-Mata four and a half hours. Its table also states that Twee Rivieren to Gharagab is not possible in one day.
Those figures show why every camp move deserves its own place in the itinerary. Ask reception about current conditions and the permitted timing for your next stage. Allow for check-out, loading, stops and wildlife watching, and avoid treating an indicative transfer time as a guaranteed arrival.
The park's access guidance describes internal roads as gravel and warns that sedans can struggle; wet conditions can also affect accessibility. Gate times are enforced and travel after dark is prohibited. Confirm the relevant camp and gate times rather than assuming every day has the same operating window.

Match the vehicle to every booked camp
Discuss the exact itinerary with your rental company and SANParks before confirming a vehicle. The park recommends a high-clearance 4x4 with low range. An urban SUV description alone does not establish that a particular rental meets a route's requirements or that its contract permits the journey.
For Bitterpan and Gharagab, SANParks explicitly requires a high-clearance, low-range 4x4; SUVs and all-wheel-drive vehicles are not accepted on those routes. Access is restricted to guests booked at those camps, and trailers are prohibited. These restrictions make the wilderness-camp choice part of the transport decision.
A first trip based at the main rest camps can still be a substantial desert holiday. There is no obligation to add a specialist sand route to make it complete. If you want that kind of excursion, obtain its specific booking and equipment requirements and use qualified preparation rather than learning recovery techniques from a holiday article.
Compare facilities before choosing your accommodation type
The official facilities list identifies shops and fuel at Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata. Twee Rivieren also has a restaurant and cell reception. These services help explain why the main camps are useful starting points when you are learning how the park works.
For each reservation, check what the actual unit includes: a campsite and a self-catering chalet require different packing. Verify cooking equipment, refrigeration and power arrangements against the booked category. Do not assume that another visitor's equipment list applies to your unit, or that a shop will hold every preferred item.
Plan meals and fuel around confirmed service points, and ask about current supply arrangements before travel. Carry what your itinerary requires instead of expecting a late detour between camps to solve a missing item. SANParks notes limited freezing facilities, so accommodation staff cannot be treated as an extra freezer service.
Prepare your arrival and departure days together
If approaching via Upington and Askham, distinguish the tarred access road described by SANParks from the park's internal gravel network. Save your booking confirmations and official map offline. Recheck your chosen approach close to departure, especially if considering the gravel route via Van Zylsrus.
Then work backwards from your final exit. An early onward flight and a distant final camp may be incompatible with a relaxed departure. Consider an overnight stop outside the park when that gives the journey a realistic margin. A final game drive should fit the transport plan, rather than determine whether you reach it.
This guide concentrates on the South African main-camp circuit. If entering or leaving through another country, consult the current official border-crossing requirements and your rental provider before booking; a transfrontier park does not remove immigration or vehicle-document formalities.
