When to Visit Ficksburg for Cherry Picking

Plan a November cherry-picking trip near Ficksburg and Fouriesburg. Compare ordinary orchard tours with the Ionia celebration and Sandstone's separate event.
Start with November if you want to pick cherries near Ficksburg, then book a specific farm tour before paying for accommodation. Ionia Cherry Farm lists November as its usual picking season and requires a reservation. You can ask about ordinary tours before or after its harvest celebration. Which side of the festival works better depends on which dates the farm is taking bookings and what fruit it expects to have available.
A traveller planning a visit to Ficksburg asked when cherries were picked and followed up by asking whether to come before or after the festival. The useful distinction is between the regional harvest, a named event and a farm that has a place for you on a picking tour. They do not necessarily share the same dates.
Ask for an orchard booking before choosing your weekend
Ionia's farm-tour page lists November, Monday to Saturday during the open season, with advance bookings required. It describes a tractor and wagon outing with an orchard visit, picking and a punnet to take home. Confirm those inclusions, the price and the conditions for the session you select. A special event booking can have its own ticket rules.
If picking is what makes the journey worthwhile, ask the farm three questions. Which sessions are available? What fruit does it expect guests to pick on those dates? What happens to the booking if conditions change? A shop visit can still be enjoyable if your main interest is tasting or buying cherries, but check fresh-fruit stock and shop hours before making it the purpose of a long drive.
For visitors choosing between two ordinary weekends, let the confirmed picking slot decide. Leave one meal and another local stop flexible. That makes it easier to respond if the farm can offer a later departure or a different day from your first choice.
For 2026, separate Ionia from Sandstone
Ionia Cherry Farm advertises its Cherry Crop Celebration for 12 to 14 November 2026 on the R26 between Ficksburg and Fouriesburg. Its official event booking page offers admission, timed Cherry Tour sessions and camping as separate selections. The listing's overall booking window extends into Sunday 15 November, while the farm advertises the celebration for Thursday to Saturday. Check the live programme and the actual date on your ticket. Do not assume a Sunday orchard session from the listing's overall end time.
Sandstone Estates advertises its own Cherry Steam Festival on 12 to 14 November. The estates describe a programme centred on steam and heritage machinery. Use the Ionia booking route for an Ionia picking slot and the Sandstone booking route for its heritage programme. Ask each organiser which experiences its ticket includes and where you need to check in.
| What you want | Book or confirm first |
|---|---|
| A quieter orchard visit | An ordinary picking session and expected crop availability with the farm. |
| Festival atmosphere and picking | The Ionia event admission and the exact timed orchard session. |
| Steam and heritage exhibits | Sandstone's own programme and ticket. |
| Fresh cherries to take home | Stock, opening hours and any order arrangements with the farm or shop. |
Build the trip around the booked time
If your session is early and you have a long journey, arrive the afternoon before and choose accommodation based on the farm's directions. Compare the actual address with your booked venue. A Ficksburg room, a Fouriesburg room and a campsite on an event property create different arrival plans.
For a family outing, ask whether children need separate admission or picking tickets, how the wagon is boarded and what ground you will walk over. Check any access requirements and how far parking is from check-in. If you want both events, give the orchard and heritage visits enough time to stand on their own. One can fill the day when your priority is to browse and eat without watching the clock.
If you want to extend the trip, our Clarens weekend guide covers a separate village and sandstone-country stop. For a separate Cape Peninsula stage, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
