Train or Drive to Elgin Railway Market? Plan the Day

Choose the Cape Town heritage train or drive to Elgin Railway Market. Check the right departure, locomotive, market hours and return.
Take the Cape Rail train to Elgin Railway Market if the train journey is part of the outing. Drive to the market if you mainly want lunch, stalls and more control over when you return. The Cape Town rail trip takes most of the day, and the operator can use diesel locomotives. Check what is planned before booking if steam is the reason for going.

Reserve the right train and departure point
Cape Rail Company advertises a weekend return from Cape Town to the Elgin Railway Market via Sir Lowry's Pass. The published Cape Town departure is 08:05. Confirm the date, platform and check-in instructions on your ticket before setting out. The booking system still uses the Ceres Rail name in places. Check that the product is the Cape Town return, since the operator also lists a separate Bot River departure.
The operator's day-seating booking page identifies Dockrail Road in Cape Town's Foreshore and asks visitors to arrive before departure. It says steam and diesel can be used together and diesel can substitute for steam. If you're taking a child who wants to see a steam engine, ask about the planned locomotive and explain the possibility of a change. The archive photograph is an example of heritage rail, so check today's train separately.
Keep time for the market and the return
At Elgin, the market operates in a former apple warehouse on Oak Avenue. Its own site lists the full market on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 16:00, with food and crafts. Weekday offerings differ. Check any holiday notices and use your actual return boarding time when deciding when to eat.
The operator's booking information warns that rail delays can change the time at the market and the return. Leave the evening flexible, particularly if you are considering a timed dinner or an onward transfer. Ask about carriage layout, boarding and toilets if someone in your group needs a specific arrangement. Pick the seats for the people travelling with you rather than assuming every carriage has the same layout.
Drive if the market is the main reason you're going
Use the market's own hours and address to plan a shorter visit by car. You can choose a meal, spend time among the stalls and leave when you're ready. The market identifies public viewing areas for watching a train arrive. Check whether a train is running and follow signs and staff guidance on the day. Stay in designated public areas.
