District Six Museum: Guided, Self-Guided or Site Walk?

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Choose between a self-guided museum visit, a guided indoor tour and a separately arranged site walk in District Six.

Choose self-guided admission at the District Six Museum if you want to read, listen and reflect at your own pace. Book a guided museum visit if you want someone to explain how the exhibits fit together and answer questions. A site walk is a separate arrangement, so ask the museum about the outdoor programme, meeting point and length before putting it into your Cape Town itinerary.

How long should you allow for the museum?

A traveller asked about the length of a District Six Museum guided tour. The museum lists start times but gives no standard duration on its main visitor page. For a guided visit, confirm the tour's expected finish with the museum, allow time to check in, and leave room to return to anything you want to see again before making another timed booking.

For a self-guided visit, reserve 60 to 90 minutes as a starting allowance. That gives you room to read the introductory material and spend time on a few stories. If your interests include oral history or the geography of the old neighbourhood, give yourself longer. With children, you could pick one story, name or street together and let their questions shape the rest of the visit. For groups, avoid using your allotted time to see every display if the children have engaged with something specific.

Choose a museum ticket or arrange an outdoor walk

  • Self-guided museum visit: Choose this if your city schedule has a moving window, or you want to spend time reading the exhibits in your own order. Use the museum's ticket link to check how to arrange entry for your date.
  • Guided museum visit: Choose this when you want a person to help put the exhibition in context. The museum lists 09:30, 10:30, 11:30 and 13:30 on its visitor information page. Check that the session you want is running. The museum’s group visits notice says former residents are no longer available for walk-in guided visits. If that is an important part of the visit for you, ask the museum what it can arrange in advance.
  • Guided site walk: The visitor page describes a separately arranged, weather-dependent walk and lists a minimum of five participants. Contact the museum before booking around it. Ask whether your party can join an existing group, where to meet and whether the walking programme includes admission to the museum.

The museum publishes general hours of 09:00 to 16:00, Monday to Saturday. Its site directs visitors to its ticket page. Check your date and product there or ask the museum if an option is unclear. The site lists different prices for self-guided entry, guided entry and the outdoor walk. A tour's inclusion in a multi-attraction product can also differ, so confirm which version you would actually receive before buying.

Go to the right Buitenkant Street address

The permanent exhibition is in the former Methodist church at 25A Buitenkant Street. The Homecoming Centre is a separate building further along the same street, used for other museum work and programming. Check your confirmation for the meeting point if you booked an event, a school visit or a site walk. If a step-free route, seating or assistance with audio materials is important for anyone in your group, ask the museum about the arrangements for the specific programme before travelling.

Give the stories space in your city day

The District Six Museum was established to keep alive the memories of the neighbourhood and people displaced by apartheid forced removals. Its permanent exhibition, Digging Deeper, builds on the exhibition that opened with the museum in 1994. The place names and personal histories help you see the district as a community of streets, shops and households. Leave room to read how individuals describe their own experiences.

Look for the map that helps orient the old street grid. The museum's account of its first exhibition explains how former residents used maps to locate streets and remember where people lived. Start with one street name or remembered address, then look for it in a story or photograph. That gives a self-guided visit a focus and can give you a specific question to take into a guided session.

If you also book the site walk, consider leaving a break between the indoor and outdoor parts. Read the confirmation for weather arrangements and respect the guide's instructions on access and photography. If the walk cannot run, keep the museum visit and leave time to reflect or discuss what you saw. A guided indoor visit offers a place to ask questions, while a self-guided visit lets the group move at different speeds.

For a wider city itinerary, see our guide to choosing between Cape Town museums. It compares District Six with the Castle of Good Hope and Zeitz MOCAA so you can put each visit on a day when you have time for it. If your trip also includes a separate Cape Peninsula stay with travellers aged 12 and over, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town.
