Cape Winelands Mountain Passes: Scenic Routes and Closures

Choose between mountain-pass journeys with dated official road notices, a clear tunnel distinction and room to change the route.
Choose a Cape Winelands mountain-pass drive around the road's actual status and your next overnight stop. Du Toitskloof's old R101 pass and the N1 Huguenot Tunnel are different journeys. Franschhoek Pass is a separate crossing towards the Theewaterskloof side, and the latest official information reviewed here does not support including it in a current through itinerary.
For a holiday built around scenery, one well-chosen crossing with time to stop can be enough. Avoid making several passes compulsory stages between a tasting appointment, lunch and a distant check-in. Roadworks and weather can change that calculation even when the map still draws a continuous line.

Start with the scenery question, then check the route
An actual traveller comparing Du Toitskloof and Franschhoek Pass asks which would add different scenery on a Stellenbosch-to-Oudtshoorn journey. That is a useful way to choose: consider what the crossing contributes to the whole holiday, rather than ranking roads in isolation.
The discussion is historical. Its route suggestions and assurances cannot establish today's access. In particular, a recommendation to take Franschhoek Pass before continuing inland needs a fresh check against the authority's later closure and recovery notices.
If your main decision is which wine valley to visit, our Stellenbosch and Franschhoek planning guide covers those destinations. Here the decision is the journey between destinations, including when to drop a scenic crossing.
Separate the old Du Toitskloof pass from the tunnel
The Western Cape Government identifies the old pass as the R101, connecting Paarl with the Rawsonville and Worcester side. Its separate N1 alternative runs through the Huguenot Tunnel and is a toll road. Selecting the N1 does not mean you have driven the old mountain pass.
That distinction matters when saving a route. Search the actual road number, inspect the proposed route before departure and keep a separate plan for the tunnel corridor. If the reason for your choice is an above-ground mountain drive, check that navigation has not substituted the tunnel; if the priority is making an onward booking, do not assume the old pass will take the same time.
The September 2025 maintenance report gives historical project targets. A later 15 May 2026 SANRAL notice records that both the N1 stretch and R101 pass had reopened after May storm damage. Check current access to the R101 and N1 separately before choosing your route.
Leave Franschhoek Pass out of a current through plan
The official notice dated 15 May 2026 records an indefinite closure effective from 14 May 2026 following damage, applying to vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians. A pedestrian or bicycle approach is therefore not an alternative way to use the closed crossing.
A 24 October 2026 government update anticipates project completion in July 2027, subject to conditions. It describes a possible opening during the builders' break from mid-December to mid-January, with stop/go controls, while explicitly allowing for continued closure if conditions require it. That is a conditional future expectation, not a reopening announcement.
For a November trip, choose a confirmed route that does not depend on crossing the pass. You can still plan a stay in Franschhoek, but ask your accommodation for the current arrival approach and allow for works on the surrounding network. Do not interpret the town being accessible as permission to continue over the closed mountain road.
Treat Bain's Kloof as its own outing
Bain's Kloof is another option to investigate for a scenery-led journey around Wellington, rather than a substitute inserted automatically into every Franschhoek itinerary. It adds its own approach, crossing and onward connection. Compare the complete day's route before choosing it for the view.
The government's 8 July 2026 notice announced reopening under traffic accommodation and asked travellers to allow extra time. Its 10 July page records reopening. Those dated notices are useful context, but they do not guarantee unrestricted travel on a later holiday date. Check again for subsequent restrictions.
A road crossing also does not grant access to river activities, trails or private land. If you want an activity on the same day, obtain the relevant reservation and access requirements separately, then decide whether the combined day leaves enough time.
Build a route you can shorten
Write down your starting accommodation, final destination, one preferred scenic crossing and one direct alternative. Work back from the latest arrival time that matters. Keep a lunch reservation or tasting only when it still fits after realistic roadwork delays and a proper pause from driving.
For photographs, use an authorised stopping place only when it is available and appropriate. A picture on a travel website does not establish public parking or permission to stop at that exact location. Never turn a closure barrier or a work zone into a viewpoint visit.
Check the Department of Infrastructure notices and the official road closure map through Roads4U before leaving. Follow current road signs and traffic control. When you cannot confirm a crossing, choose a verified alternative.
If the journey later returns to the southern Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town for that separate coastal stay. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
