Cape Town Chocolate Tastings: Choose a Talk, Workshop or Cafe

Choose between an AFRIKOA tasting, an Honest factory workshop and Rapt group packages, with venue, age and ingredient checks.
A chocolate-focused Cape Town outing can mean three different things: a guided tasting, a hands-on workshop or a cafe stop for something sweet. Choose the format first. AFRIKOA at Makers Landing offers a talk followed by tasting; Honest advertises dated workshops at its Woodstock factory; Rapt on Buitenkant Street has group packages with different durations and participation requirements.
You do not need to visit them all. One well-chosen experience leaves time to listen, taste and ask questions, without turning a holiday afternoon into a sugar-heavy checklist. A cafe dessert afterwards is optional, and it does not replace a booked learning session. Our Cape Town eating guide helps with the separate choice of a meal nearby.
Choose tasting, making or simply sitting down
For people interested in where chocolate comes from, prioritise a host who explains cacao origins and the steps between beans and finished chocolate. For someone who wants a creative activity, ask how much of the session involves making something personally. Those preferences can lead to different bookings even when both products use the word experience.
A cafe suits a flexible break between other attractions. A workshop is a fixed appointment that needs its own travel time and group agreement. Before paying, establish the venue, duration, minimum attendance, age conditions and whether accompanying non-participants can join or wait nearby.
AFRIKOA: a bean-to-bar explanation at Makers Landing
AFRIKOA's Bean to Bar Experience was listed at R150 per person when reviewed on 3 November 2026. Its most useful clarification is explicit: the product is an informative talk by a chocolatier followed by tasting at the Makers Landing store. Do not book it expecting to walk through a manufacturing factory.
The company describes working with Tanzanian cacao and explains stages such as fermentation, roasting, refining and tempering. Use the talk to understand the sequence and ask which differences you can notice in the chocolates being served. You do not need to memorise every processing term to make the visit worthwhile.
Contact the Makers Landing store for an available session, the time to allow and the correct entrance at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal precinct. Confirm any participation or group conditions directly. A product being listed online does not establish that a host will be available at your preferred arrival time.
Honest: book the factory workshop separately from the cafe
Honest's public workshop page currently lists 28 November 2026, from 10am to noon, at R450 per person, alongside earlier dates that have already passed. Use the linked booking service to check actual ticket availability rather than treating the published date as a guaranteed place.
The advertised session includes tasting and an introduction, a live demonstration, decorating and wrapping four bonbons, and making a slab with toppings. The important location detail is that workshops take place at the chocolate factory in Woodstock. Obtain the exact arrival instructions with your booking.
Honest's Wale Street cafe is at 64A Wale Street, a different destination. It offers hot chocolate, drinks and desserts. A table there is a cafe visit, not automatic admission to the Woodstock workshop. The cafe page also describes a Kalk Bay branch, so check which venue you have saved.
Rapt: check the group minimum and workshop format
Rapt's event packages distinguish a Builder Experience from a longer Chocolate Workshop. At review, Builder was R300 per person for 60 minutes with a minimum of five participants, involving a build-a-bar activity and a choice of the listed accompanying treat or drink.
The longer workshop was advertised for ages 16 and older, groups of five to twenty, and two to three hours. Its listed prices were R400 for a Cosmic Bar or R600 for a Dubai pistachio bar. It includes chocolate history, tasting and making a slab. Ask the events team what is included in the final quotation and whether your group fits the chosen package.
The venue is 39 Buitenkant Street. Confirm arrival and opening arrangements: Rapt's own landing page and the group's contact and packages pages display different trading hours. A booked workshop time and ordinary shop service should be confirmed independently, especially for an evening outing.
Ask about ingredients before you commit
Tell the venue exactly which ingredients and cross-contact concerns matter to your party before buying tickets. AFRIKOA's product page states that manufacturing takes place in a factory processing tree nuts, milk powders and gluten. A vegan item or a dark-chocolate percentage does not establish that an experience is suitable for a particular allergy.
Honest describes its workshop as vegan and family-friendly, but that description does not settle individual allergy requirements or a particular child's participation. Rapt's longer format has an explicit age threshold. Confirm the actual rules for each session, and seek qualified clinical advice where needed rather than relying on a travel article to assess an allergy.
Make the tasting useful beyond the afternoon
Ask the host which cacao origin, ingredients and processing choices distinguish the samples. Compare what is actually on the tasting plate before adding another drink or dessert. Keep the name of your favourite so you can identify it in the shop later; there is no requirement to prefer the darkest or least sweet option.
Ask about storage for your onward journey before buying filled chocolates or taking workshop creations away. A box purchased at the start of a long day needs a different plan from one going straight back to your accommodation. Check the relevant destination's import rules if taking food internationally.
Keep the city experience within a manageable Cape Town day, with transport arranged to the correct workshop venue. For a separate Cape Point and Boulders Beach stay, check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
