Cape Point is worth a visit for its cliff views, maritime history and walking routes. The practical choice is how to spend your time inside the reserve. The old lighthouse, the Flying Dutchman funicular and the Olifantsbos shipwreck walk are separate experiences. The funicular has its own ticket, and the shipwreck trail starts in another part of the reserve. This guide helps you choose a manageable outing from Simon's Town.

Choose your main experience first

• Views with less uphill walking: check the Flying Dutchman service and buy a separate funicular ticket if it suits your group.
• A walk around the lighthouse area: wear suitable shoes and decide which paths match your fitness, the weather and the time available.
• Shipwreck history: plan a separate drive to Olifantsbos and allow proper walking time there.

The old lighthouse and the walking choice

The lighthouse above Cape Point is one of the reserve's best-known landmarks. Walking uphill gives you time to notice the changing views, but it is a real climb rather than a flat stroll from the parking area. Bring water, a sun hat and a layer for changing conditions. Do not judge the conditions on the exposed headland by a sheltered morning in Simon's Town.

Allow time to come back down as well as to take photographs. A member of the group who prefers a shorter visit can enjoy the main visitor area without committing to a longer coastal trail. Agree on a meeting place and time before separating, especially when travelling with a driver or tour.

Flying Dutchman: a separate ticket and a different timetable

The funicular reduces the uphill climb; it does not make every lighthouse path step-free. Visitors with mobility requirements should ask the operator about the exact route, remaining steps and assistance before buying tickets. Reserve admission and the funicular fare are separate charges.

The current official visitor information lists October to March reserve gates from 06:00 to 18:00, while funicular hours are 09:00 to 17:30. An early park arrival therefore does not mean an early funicular departure. Check the official visitor information for the day you travel and follow notices on site. If the service is unavailable, choose an alternative your group can comfortably manage; walking is not an all-weather substitute.

For visits from 1 November 2026: check the new applicable tariffs before budgeting. Prices marked valid to 31 October 2026 should not be used as a quotation for a later trip. Check both the conservation fee and any separate funicular ticket.

Olifantsbos shipwrecks are a separate outing

The Thomas T Tucker shipwreck route starts at Olifantsbos, not below the main lighthouse parking area. The reserve's official shipwreck trail guide describes marked walking from the Olifantsbos parking area towards the coast. Use a current park map and ask about trail conditions before setting off.

Choose this walk because you want a coastal history outing, rather than adding it as a last-minute viewpoint. Include the drive, the walk and your return to the vehicle in the plan. Keep to marked paths, wear shoes with grip and leave wreck material where it is. If the weather or your remaining time is unsuitable, save the trail for another visit.

Three ways to structure your day

A shorter lighthouse visit

Focus on the main Cape Point visitor area and choose between walking uphill and the funicular if it is operating. Keep a buffer for ticket queues, photographs and the return journey. Do not promise yourself a shipwreck hike as well. This is the clearer option when you have an afternoon appointment or a fixed pickup.

A walking-focused reserve day

Choose a main trail in advance and check its start point. Keep the lighthouse area or another scenic stop as an optional addition, rather than scheduling every attraction. Tell your driver the intended walking duration and agree on the return arrangement before mobile coverage becomes a problem.

Penguins and Cape Point in one day

Keep both visits focused. Decide whether you want penguin viewing, beach time, the lighthouse area or a longer reserve walk most. Is the funicular included in park entry?

No. Budget separately for reserve admission and a funicular ticket. Check the tariff valid on your travel date, particularly for visits from 1 November.

Can we arrive when the reserve opens and ride straight up?

Not necessarily. The published summer gate and funicular opening times differ. Plan an early arrival around what is actually open.

Can we walk to the Thomas T Tucker from the lighthouse car park?

The shipwreck trail starts at Olifantsbos. Treat it as a separate route with its own drive, parking and walking allowance.

Does taking the funicular remove all walking and steps?

No. It reduces the main uphill climb. Confirm the remaining route with the operator if steps, gradients or mobility assistance affect your visit.
