First-Time Camping at Bontebok National Park

Posted on Tue November 3, 2026.

Plan a first Bontebok camping trip near Swellendam. Check your site, gate time and reopened trails before arriving at Lang Elsie's Kraal.

For a first camping trip at Bontebok National Park, book a site at Lang Elsie's Kraal, get supplies in Swellendam and arrive with time to set up. Use one confirmed trail or a wildlife drive as the next day's outing. Flood repairs have reopened some facilities and left others at different stages of recovery, so check the exact site and trail rather than planning around the river.

Book a campsite or make it a chalet night

SANParks places Bontebok Rest Camp, also called Lang Elsie's Kraal, beside the Breede River. The 1 September 2026 SANParks update reports that the campsite and six chalets reopened after the May flooding. It also says work continued on other chalets, trails and the picnic site. Check your exact site, unit and intended activity for your dates. An older closure notice can still appear on the park site, so use the dated reopening information and confirm any changes with the park.

Book a campsite if everyone wants to try sleeping under canvas and you can bring the equipment. Check whether your particular site has power and what connection is needed. Try setting up at home if this is your first trip. A chalet can make sense for a one-night visit if you're still learning what you need, or if some of the group wants a bed and a place to prepare a meal.

Get supplies and leave time for arrival

The park's visitor guidance says there's no shop, restaurant or fuel station inside. Get meals, fuel and forgotten supplies in Swellendam. It also says private generators are prohibited at campsites and that lighting at camp is limited. Bring a torch or headlamp and pack what you need for the first evening separately so you can find it without emptying the vehicle.

Check the entrance-gate information for identification requirements and the hours for your month. Ask how your booking affects the latest check-in time. Arriving before the gate closes can still leave little time for setting up, so aim for daylight and arrange any late arrival in advance with reception.

Choose one outing the park confirms

The September update names Aloe Hill, Acacia and Termite as reopened trails. Bushbuck, Ou Tuin and the picnic site were still undergoing repairs at that update. Ask reception which paths you can use and where to turn back. Make the river scenery part of the setting and use only the areas that park staff confirm are open. Leave swimming, river access or a specific picnic site out of the plan until the park confirms it.

For a family with children, make the first camp evening simple. Pick one walk for the morning if it suits the group, or ask about the open driving routes if you'd rather look for wildlife from the vehicle. Bontebok sightings vary, so enjoy the Langeberg views and stop when everyone has had enough. If you need a town meal or the weather changes, our Swellendam short-break guide covers alternatives nearby.

Adding a separate Cape Peninsula stay? Aqua Terra in Simon's Town welcomes guests aged 12 and over. Check Aqua Terra availability.
