Bokkomlaan in Velddrif is a short Berg River stop for a walk, coffee and a look at the fish houses where the town's preserved-fish tradition developed. It works best as a detour from a West Coast stay if you give it time rather than expecting a quick attraction on the way into Langebaan.

Start with the fish houses and river edge

Bergrivier Municipality identifies Bokkomlaan as a place to see the local tradition of drying and selling bokkoms. The municipality's conservation management plan describes a group of fish houses, or vishuise, beside the road, with drying structures and jetties along the water. Those details help explain the street: the fish houses are part of a working heritage area, with the river on the other side.

Walk along the public parts of the lane and look at how the buildings and river structures fit together. Ask before entering a fish house or using a jetty, and give people space if they are working. If you would like to take a portrait or photograph someone at work, ask first. You can see enough of the place from the road even when an individual business is closed.

Make coffee or a fish stop optional

Wesgro's West Coast itinerary mentions local seafood at Ek en Djy Vissery and coffee at Columbine Co. Use the listing as a starting point, then check whether the business is serving on your date. If you want to try bokkoms, ask a shop how the fish was prepared and how it is normally served. Buy a small amount if you're curious and aren't sure what the group will enjoy.

For a longer lunch, confirm the kitchen and table before you drive. If all you want is a short river visit, don't tie it to a particular menu. A cup of coffee or time looking across the Berg River can be the whole outing.

Fit Velddrif into a West Coast weekend

If you are based in Langebaan or Paternoster, make Bokkomlaan the main stop for one part of the day. Leave room to watch the river from a public spot if you have time. The municipality notes the estuary's birdlife, but what you see will depend on the day. Avoid using the jetty photograph as a guide to public access.
