When the plankton bloom, and they bloom on their own schedule. False Bay's glowing waves, electric blue lines that light up where the water breaks, are caused by dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms that flash when the water around them is agitated. It is one of the coast's great bonus shows: unpredictable, unbookable and unforgettable, most often reported on warm, calm summer nights when a new bloom has drifted in.

What actually causes it

The glow is a defence mechanism at cellular scale. Agitation, a breaking wave, a paddle, a fish darting by, triggers a chemical flash that lasts a fraction of a second, and a shoreline of breaking waves turns the flash into a neon seam. Blooms build when warm, nutrient-rich conditions let the plankton multiply, which is why sightings cluster in the warmer months and often follow calm spells after upwelling. The sea decides; the reports follow.

When the odds improve

Three factors stack in your favour. Season: summer and early autumn nights produce most reports. Moon: dark nights around the new moon make even faint glows visible. And timing: an hour or two after sunset, once your eyes have adjusted, is when the water starts to talk. Calm bays with a gentle shore break show the effect better than wind-chopped water.

Where to look

Darkness is the ingredient most beaches lack, so pick the wild stretches: the coves south of Simon's Town, the darker ends of Fish Hoek and Muizenberg, and the rocky edges near Miller's Point, all mapped in our best-beaches guide. Distance from street lighting matters more than fame of the spot, and local social groups spread glowing-water reports fast; the second night after a report is often the best night.

How to watch, and shoot

Give your eyes fifteen to twenty minutes away from torches and phone screens; the glow is faint to fresh eyes and obvious to adapted ones. For photographs, a phone on night mode braced on a rock can catch a wave line, and a proper camera wants a long exposure at the break. Use a red-light torch if you bring one, keep to the sand above the waterline, and leave the night swimming for daylight: dark water, rip currents and urchins are a poor combination regardless of how pretty the glow looks.
