The name comes from a navigational mistake. Sailors returning from the East sometimes mistook Cape Hangklip, at the eastern side of the bay, for Cape Point. They turned north too soon and entered the broad bay instead of rounding the Cape Peninsula toward Table Bay. The error gave Cape Hangklip the Portuguese name Cabo Falso, or False Cape, and the bay inherited the warning.

The error that named it

Picture the westbound approach after a long voyage from the Indian Ocean. In poor visibility, Cape Hangklip can appear to be the headland that marks the turn around the Cape Peninsula. Ships that turned north there found themselves travelling into False Bay, with the true Cape Point still to the west. Charts and sailing directions carried the warning forward, and a navigator's mistake became the permanent name.

A bay that earned its reputation

The irony is that False Bay's hazards were real even when its name was about confusion. The same winter storms that made the Cape the Cape of Storms swept this coast, and the reserve at its tip keeps a Shipwreck Trail as proof. The bay that deceived approaching navigators could also punish overconfident ones, which is why the old sailing directions treated the whole corner of Africa with respect.

What the name does not mean

Nothing about the bay is lesser or artificial. It is the larger of the two great bays, warmer than the Atlantic side, home to the country's most famous penguin colony and some of its richest marine life. The name records a navigator's embarrassment, not a judgement, and locals wear it with affection: False Bay is where Cape Town goes to swim.
