How Early Should You Leave Cape Town for Cape Point?

The practical answer

If Cape Point is a priority, leave central Cape Town at about 07:00 during busy summer periods. In quieter months, a departure between 07:30 and 08:00 is usually comfortable. The aim is not simply to beat a queue. An early start protects time for viewpoints, wildlife stops and short walks before afternoon wind or traffic changes the day.

How long does the drive take?

A direct drive from central Cape Town to the Cape Point gate can take roughly 75 to 100 minutes in light traffic. A scenic route with coastal stops takes longer. Road works, weekend traffic, beach weather and slow-moving sightseeing vehicles can all change the estimate, so do not build the itinerary around the fastest map time.

Which route should you take?

The False Bay route through Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Simon's Town is the most useful choice if you want to add Boulders Beach. The Atlantic route through Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak is dramatic, but the toll road can close during unsafe conditions. Check the official Chapman's Peak status on the morning of travel.

When should you visit Boulders Beach?

If penguins are essential, visit Boulders early and continue south to Cape Point. This reduces parking pressure and keeps the reserve for late morning and early afternoon. If you prefer a quieter reserve visit, go directly to Cape Point and return to Boulders later, accepting that the colony may be busier.

A simple day plan

Leave central Cape Town around 07:00. Reach Simon's Town or Boulders around 08:15. Continue to the Cape Point gate after the penguin visit and allow at least three hours inside the reserve. Stop for lunch on the return journey rather than trying to reserve a fixed table at the exact moment you expect to leave the park.

Why staying closer helps

A night in Simon's Town removes much of the early cross-city drive. You can reach Boulders and the reserve before many day tours, return for a rest, and adapt the day around weather rather than traffic. This is particularly valuable for families, photographers and travellers who dislike rushed sightseeing.

Before you leave

Confirm the park's current gate hours, ticket rules and any road closures through official sources. Take water, sun protection and a wind layer, even when the city feels warm. Never feed baboons and keep food out of sight inside the reserve.
