What Should You Do in Simon's Town After Seeing the Penguins?

Seeing the African penguins at Boulders Beach is often the reason travellers come to Simon's Town, but it does not need to be the end of the visit. The town has enough history, coastline and low-key local character to turn a quick penguin stop into a rewarding half day or full day.

Start with the penguins, then slow down

Boulders is usually easier when you arrive before the biggest day-tour crowds. Give yourself time for the boardwalks and, if conditions suit, the sheltered beach area. These are wild birds in a protected national park, so keep your distance, do not feed them and follow the current SANParks rules.

Afterwards, resist the temptation to drive straight back to central Cape Town. Simon's Town rewards a slower pace.

Walk the historic centre

Head towards Jubilee Square and the Historic Mile. The town's naval heritage is visible in its harbour, old buildings and museums. The statue of Just Nuisance on Jubilee Square is a useful starting point, and the surrounding streets are easy to explore in short sections. Museum opening times can change, so check directly before building your day around a particular visit.

Choose a local lunch

For a relaxed lunch, the harbour area has seafood and casual options, while the centre has coffee shops and bakeries. If you are continuing towards Cape Point, you can also choose a stop farther south along the coast. Avoid overloading the schedule. A proper lunch and a short walk often make a better day than trying to tick off every viewpoint.

Add one coastal experience

Pick one extra activity according to the weather and your interests:

- A sheltered swim or beach stop when conditions are calm.
- A harbour or boat outing, booked with a reputable local operator and reconfirmed for sea conditions.
- A short local walk, with suitable shoes, water and a weather check.
- A visit to a maritime or community museum if the wind or rain makes outdoor plans less appealing.

If you still have energy, continue to Cape Point

Boulders Beach and Cape Point can work on the same day, but only if you start early and keep the middle of the day simple. Check the reserve's current gate hours, ticket arrangements and road conditions before leaving. Keep food out of sight around baboons and never feed them.

2. Explore the penguin boardwalks without rushing.
3. Walk part of Simon's Town's historic centre.

6. Continue to Cape Point only if time and weather still make sense.
