Valley of Desolation and Graaff-Reinet: Plan Your Visit

Combine the Valley of Desolation with Graaff-Reinet's town attractions, with practical advice on time, separate park entrances and the Robert Sobukwe name change.
Combine the Valley of Desolation with time in Graaff-Reinet by making the town your overnight base and giving the viewpoint outing its own part of the day. Visit museums or a fossil centre during their opening hours, then plan the Valley around confirmed park access, weather and enough time to return through the gate.
The appeal is the combination: the Karoo's dramatic rock landscape above town and the buildings, collections and stories below. A quick photograph on a long transfer day captures only part of that experience.

First, recognise both town names
The February 2026 Government Gazette approved Robert Sobukwe as the new name for Graaff-Reinet. In its 12 October 2026 statement, the Ministry said that the gazetted change had not been withdrawn. Many travel listings and attraction websites still use Graaff-Reinet, including the sources linked here.
Keep both names in mind when checking accommodation, directions and booking confirmations. Match the actual property or attraction pin and street address. A different town name on a screen should prompt a location check rather than an assumption that your booking is somewhere else.
How much time should you allow for the Valley?
A traveller asked specifically about driving from town to the peak and back. The useful distinction is between driving time and the whole visit. Your outing also needs time for entry, the road's viewpoints, parking, walking to the viewing areas and the descent.
As an editorial planning allowance, leave half a day free for the Valley rather than scheduling it between tight appointments. You may use less of that time if you only visit the principal viewpoints. The point of the allowance is to let you stop and enjoy the landscape, not to establish a guaranteed tour duration.
SANParks' official Valley information describes a tarred road to the viewpoints and the piled dolerite columns overlooking the Great Karoo plains. The published road description does not establish today's road condition. Ask the park about any current restrictions before setting off.
Use the right Camdeboo entrance
Camdeboo National Park has different access arrangements for different areas. Use the Valley of Desolation destination and the current official visitor map when planning this outing. The Valley approach is associated with the R63 side; the park's office and camping entrance on the N9 is a separate location.
Confirm the appropriate gate's hours on the SANParks entrance-gates page and with the park. The published schedules vary by season and area. A closing time for the camping or game-viewing entrance should not be used as the Valley's closing time.
Carry the identification and registration information the park requires, and check the current conservation fee and accepted payment arrangements. Budget for the park separately from town attractions. An accommodation booking or museum admission does not establish what is covered at the park gate.
Sunset is a plan with a gate deadline
Sunset often features in visitor itineraries. A first-time couple planning a November road trip included the Valley for sunset while also trying to reach each overnight stop before dark. Those two aims need to be reconciled in the actual day's schedule.
Establish the required exit time first, then decide how much late-afternoon viewing time is practical. Leave sufficient time to return to the gate. Ask park staff about the current arrangement instead of assuming you can remain until the light has gone and descend afterwards.
If a late arrival, weather or gate timing makes that hurried, choose an earlier visit. The rock formations do not depend on a particular photograph. At the viewpoints, stay within designated visitor areas and keep clear of edges. Visitors with access or mobility needs should ask about the current route from parking to viewpoints; a tarred driving road does not describe every path beyond it.
Give the town a morning of its own
The Graaff-Reinet Museums provide a way to explore local cultural and natural history, with sites including Reinet House, the Old Residency, Old Library and Urquhart House. Choose the collections that interest you rather than assuming every museum can be covered on the same admission schedule.
Confirm which buildings will be open on your date, particularly on weekends and public holidays. If a particular collection is your reason for visiting, contact the museum before finalising the day. Allow a meal break and some time to notice the streets and architecture between visits, while respecting working buildings and private properties.
The Karoo Origins Fossil Centre at 30 Parsonage Street is another specific option. Its current visitor information distinguishes ordinary entry from a separately booked one-hour guided tour, which requires a minimum of four people. Check the present hours and arrangements before promising a guided visit to a smaller party.
One night or two?
For one night, aim to arrive with a usable afternoon, visit the Valley within the gate schedule, then explore a selected town attraction the next morning. Two nights give you a full day without carrying the next long drive in the back of your mind. These are itinerary suggestions, subject to the opening hours and conditions you confirm.
This is an inland Karoo stop. Map the onward journey separately from any coastal Garden Route stage rather than treating it as a small detour. If your wider holiday also includes the Cape Peninsula, check Aqua Terra's direct availability in Simon's Town for that separate part of the trip.
