Tipping in South Africa is real, modest and easy once you know the shapes: roughly ten to fifteen percent at tables, and small notes to the people who make daily life smoother, from car guards to petrol attendants. Nobody is chasing you for a percentage, and no service charge ambushes your bill, but the small gratuity culture here is genuine and appreciated. Here is who gets what, and the cash-vs-card detail that trips up most visitors.

Restaurants

Ten percent for solid service, fifteen for excellent, is the working norm, and servers live on it in a way visitors should respect. The card machine almost always offers a tip option, which works fine at larger venues; at small kitchens and markets, cash tips land faster and warmer. Check the bill first: a printed service charge is rare here, but it exists at some hotel and group venues, and double-tipping is a kind mistake nobody needs.

The informal layer

Car guards, the informal attendants who mind your parking with high-visibility vests and good cheer, earn a small note per park, more for long stays. Petrol stations are full-service by tradition: attendants fill, check and clean the windscreen, and a small note per visit is customary. Porters and hotel hands appreciate a modest note per bag or favour. Tour guides and drivers, if you have had a genuinely good day, a more substantial tip is the norm, scaled to the day's length; ask your operator what is customary for their tours rather than guessing.

Ride-hailing and taxis

Uber and Bolt have in-app tipping, and using it after a good ride keeps the ecosystem healthy; street cabs run on cash and rounding-up instincts.

Guesthouses and housekeeping

Housekeeping tips are optional and appreciated; guests commonly leave something at the end of a stay rather than daily, placed clearly for the room team. At small, personally hosted houses, a warm review can be worth as much as the note, and the hosts will never make it awkward either way.

The cash detail
