The Southern Line from Cape Town to Simon's Town is a scenic coastal journey, with the track following False Bay for much of the route. What the ride is actually like

Leaving Cape Town station, the line curves around the mountain and then commits to the coast. You pass the surf lines and painted huts of Muizenberg, the rock pools of St James, Kalk Bay's working harbour, the long sweep of Fish Hoek beach, and finally the naval town itself. Sit on the left-hand side travelling south and the sea is your window for the best part of an hour; on the return, switch sides.

When the train is safe for visitors

Daylight and company are the two big ones. Prefer daylight services and carriages with other passengers. Avoid relying on the train after dark or boarding a carriage that is visibly empty. If the service or surroundings do not feel right, use a road transfer instead.

Service patterns change. As reviewed in September 2026, weekday Southern Line trains run through to Simon's Town, while Saturdays generally use a separate shuttle from Fish Hoek.
