Wine Tasting Along the Orange River: Choose Your Stops

Posted on Mon November 2, 2026.

Choose Orange River wine tastings around Upington, Bezalel and Kakamas, with clear venue addresses, booking differences and time for a meal.

Wine tasting along the Orange River works best as a few deliberately chosen stops around Upington, Keimoes and Kakamas. The attraction is the relationship between an arid landscape, irrigated vineyards and the wines and spirits made here. Choose an actual visitor venue, rather than assuming every cellar marked on an old route map offers a tasting.

For a first visit, start with either an Upington tasting and meal or a booked farm experience farther along the river corridor. Add another venue only if the travel and opening arrangements fit. Organise a sober driver or confirmed transport before tasting, especially when combining stops in different towns.

Understand the difference between a wine region and a tasting circuit

Orange River Cellars' current regional information states that its wine production has been centralised in Upington since 2024. Grapes are received at its Keimoes, Kakamas, Groblershoop and Grootdrink cellars before being transported to Upington. Those names describe a production network; they are not confirmation of five interchangeable tourist tasting rooms.

That is a useful difference when planning this holiday. In a familiar Cape wine district, you may be accustomed to choosing several nearby estate visits. Here, work from confirmed visitor addresses and appointments. Do not turn the full grape-growing corridor into a single day's list merely because the towns share a wine-region name.

Keep the comparison curious rather than competitive. Ask how the wines on your flight relate to this particular growing area and producer. There is no need to claim the region is cheaper, quieter or better than Stellenbosch to enjoy what it offers.

Choose Orange River Cellars for an Upington-based tasting

The Orange River Cellars tasting centre is at 158 Schröder Street in Middelpos, Upington. Its head-office address is different, so save the tasting venue specifically. The current offering includes a choose-your-own wine selection, spirits and several food-pairing options, with Die Kerkmuis Restaurant on site.

This makes it possible to build a useful stop around one table: taste a selection, discuss what you enjoy and have a meal without adding another drive immediately afterwards. Tell staff if you want a wine-focused flight rather than a mixed introduction to wines and spirits, and ask what explanation accompanies the selection.

The published page requires reservations for groups of ten or more. It also distinguishes venue hours from takeaway-sales hours and lists Sunday closure. Check both the tasting and purchase arrangements for your date, particularly on a weekend or public holiday. A restaurant staying open later does not automatically establish the time for buying bottles to take away.

Make Bezalel a separate farm visit

Bezalel Wine and Brandy Estate places itself on the N14 between Upington and Keimoes, at Dyasonsklip. The estate's directions include a final gravel approach through its vineyards. Save the actual entrance instructions rather than navigating to a general river location.

Its current tasting page offers wine, fortified wine, brandy and liqueur selections, as well as pairings. Walk-ins are welcome under the published arrangements, while advance contact helps secure a host and table. Groups of eight or more are asked to write ahead, and the wine-and-canapé experience needs two days' notice.

Choose the experience before fixing lunch elsewhere. A brief tasting and a seated pairing occupy different amounts of time. If someone in your group mainly wants to understand brandy, ask about the relevant flight; if wine is the focus, make that clear when booking. A small, focused selection can tell you more than trying every category.

Choose Kakamas when Die Mas fits your wider route

Die Mas van Kakamas is a separate family farm and visitor destination on the Orange River at Kakamas. It combines grape production with wines and spirits, and offers accommodation as well as tastings. Include it because Kakamas suits your itinerary, rather than assuming it is another address within Upington.

The farm's tasting information currently lists wine, brandy and gin options, with advance booking required for groups larger than ten. It publishes weekday and Saturday tasting hours and Sunday closure. Confirm your intended visit directly, including the specific tasting and any food plans.

Meal arrangements deserve a separate check. The farm's contact page provides distinct details and hours for the tasting operation and Deck & Vine restaurant. Do not assume the restaurant and cellar follow an identical timetable, or that an older route brochure names the current food operator.

Give the tasting a purpose

Before the first pour, tell the host what you usually enjoy and what you would like to learn. You might compare dry whites, explore a producer's red blend or finish with a fortified wine. Ask which products are made from the producer's own grapes and how the chosen flight relates to the wider region.

Keep tasting notes simple: the wine's name, style and the reason you preferred it. A flavour description on a producer's page is a guide to its intended character, not a promise that everyone will experience the same aroma. Make your own comparison without needing to reproduce expert vocabulary.

For non-drinkers and family members, confirm the food and alcohol-free choices before booking. Orange River Cellars advertises non-alcoholic tasting options; that specific provision is more useful than assuming every estate offers an equivalent activity.

Leave room between the river-country stops

One sensible outline is an Upington tasting with a meal, followed on another day by one confirmed farm visit that fits your onward direction. This is an editorial suggestion, not an organised tour. Ask accommodation hosts about dependable transport and return arrangements before committing to multiple tastings.

Recheck menus, prices, hours and reservations close to departure. Keep enough time for the conversation, meal and journey back, rather than squeezing a tasting between a long transfer and an essential check-in. The result can be a worthwhile part of a Northern Cape holiday without turning it into a race through cellar doors.

If your wider journey continues to Cape Town, allow a separate Cape Peninsula stay for coastal scenery and Boulders Beach, and check Aqua Terra availability in Simon's Town. Aqua Terra welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
