How Many Days Do You Need in Cape Town? A Local's Answer

Three days covers the icons, five adds breathing room, seven lets the peninsula unfold. Here is how to size your Cape Town trip realistically.

Most first-time visitors need between three and five days in Cape Town. Three days lets you see the icons at a sensible pace, five days adds the peninsula and a wine route day, and seven days turns the trip into a genuine holiday rather than a checklist. If Table Mountain's cableway closes for weather, as it occasionally does, a spare day is exactly what saves your plans.

Three days in Cape Town: the essentials

Day 1: Table Mountain in the morning (book the cableway online), the City Bowl and Bo-Kaap in the afternoon, dinner at the V&A Waterfront.
Day 2: Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, then Camps Bay or Clifton beaches in the afternoon.
Day 3: the peninsula run: Simon's Town, Boulders Beach penguins, Cape Point and Chapman's Peak Drive.

Five days: add depth, not just distance

With five days, base yourself on the peninsula for two or three nights and let the far side of the mountain unfold: an early, crowd-free hour with the penguins at Boulders Beach, the lighthouse walk at Cape Point, a swim at one of Simon's Town's beaches, and a slow seafood lunch on the harbour. Add a Constantia or Stellenbosch wine day, and keep one afternoon unplanned for weather or whim.

Seven days or more

A week lets you add the Winelands properly, a whale watching day in season, the scenic train ride along False Bay, and time for the small pleasures: tidal pools, markets, galleries and long breakfasts. Our two-day Simon's Town itinerary slots neatly into any longer plan.

Why your base matters more than your day count

Cape Town's biggest hidden cost is time spent in the car. Staying centrally works well for nightlife and the City Bowl, but staying in Simon's Town puts you inside the peninsula's best scenery before the tour buses arrive, and after they leave. From Aqua Terra, the penguins are minutes away, Cape Point is a short scenic drive, and the evening ends on a sea-facing balcony instead of a city parking garage.
