Worth it, comfortably, when it is open: nine kilometres of cliff-hugging road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, with the ocean almost under the wheels and one of the great beach panoramas in the country at the southern end. The honest caveats are the toll and the closures. This is a working mountain road that rock nets, storms and maintenance can shut at short notice, so treat the status check as part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

What you get for the toll

Chapman's Peak was engineered in the 1920s along a cliff face that engineers once called impossible, and the drive still feels like a small miracle of nerve. Ninety-degree sea cliffs, the Hout Bay lookout, old fort walls and, at the Noordhoek end, the long white sweep of the beach with the wetlands behind it. Photographers should note the light: the afternoon sun favours the Hout Bay side, while mornings flatter the Noordhoek views.

Drive it slowly. The laybys are the point, and the road rewards ten stops more than one fast run. Watch for cyclists and runners at weekends; they share the lane and the views.

Is it open today?

Check before you build a day around it. The official Chapman's Peak Drive site publishes live status and current toll fees, and closures for weather, rock work or events can land with little warning, especially in winter. Locals simply keep the inland alternative in their pocket and check the status over breakfast.

The stops worth taking

Southbound from Hout Bay, take the first big lookout for the harbour panorama, then pace the pull-offs along the cliffs; the arches and terraces are part of the charm. Near the Noordhoek end, the viewpoint above the beach is the signature photo, and the old East Fort walls on the Hout Bay side reward a short clamber with the drive's best angle back. Give yourself an hour even without stopping for a walk.

When it is closed: the plan B

The peninsula has two graceful alternatives. Ou Kaapse Weg cuts over Silvermine to the False Bay side, while the Red Hill road from Simon's Town climbs through fynbos with sea views the whole way. Which direction should you drive?

Both work, but north-to-south, Hout Bay towards Noordhoek, puts the ocean on your left for the dramatic middle section and finishes on the wide Noordhoek reveal. If Chapman's Peak is the appetiser for a Cape Point run, leave Hout Bay mid-morning and you will meet the reserve gate with the day still ahead of you.
