Should You Stay in Hout Bay or Simon's Town for Cape Point?

For a trip built around Cape Point and Boulders Beach, Simon's Town is usually the more practical base. Hout Bay is stronger for the Atlantic Seaboard, Chapman's Peak and easy access to western-coast scenery. The best choice depends on which side of the peninsula you want to explore first and how much driving you are willing to repeat.

Both neighbourhoods feel coastal and separate from central Cape Town, but they sit on different sides of the mountain. Hout Bay faces the Atlantic side. Simon's Town overlooks False Bay and lies closer to the southern peninsula attractions that bring many visitors south.

Choose Simon's Town when Cape Point is the priority

Simon’s Town works particularly well if Cape Point, the African penguins at Boulders Beach, False Bay wildlife, diving or quieter coastal mornings are central to your plans. Starting on this side of the peninsula means you do not need to cross the city before reaching Boulders Beach or begin the Cape Point day with a long approach from the north.

Cape Town Tourism describes Simon's Town as a destination worth a full day, with maritime history, beaches, marine activities and the penguin colony. Choose Hout Bay for the Atlantic route

Hout Bay makes more sense when your itinerary is weighted towards Camps Bay, Llandudno, the harbour, western Table Mountain trails or repeated journeys along Chapman's Peak Drive. It can form the beginning of a scenic clockwise peninsula loop through Noordhoek and towards Cape Point.

The important caveat is that Chapman's Peak can be affected by weather, maintenance and traffic controls. Check the official road status before building the whole day around it. If the drive is closed, you will need another route and more time. Hout Bay therefore gives you an excellent Atlantic starting point, but not guaranteed access to the peninsula's most scenic road every day.

Which base gives you the easier Cape Point morning?

From Simon's Town, the Cape Point day begins on the False Bay side, already south of most city traffic. You can visit Boulders Beach early on a separate morning, then give the reserve the time it deserves. From Hout Bay, you will normally approach through Chapman's Peak and Noordhoek when the road is open, or use an inland alternative.

Cape Point is not a single viewpoint. The official visitor guide lists beaches, walks, picnic sites, viewpoints, the funicular and historic landmarks. Trying to fit all of that around a long return drive can turn the day into a race. Check the current Cape Point visitor information and choose two or three priorities before you leave.

Where should you stay if you also want central Cape Town?

Neither Hout Bay nor Simon's Town is the most convenient choice for a short city-only break. If your evenings revolve around the City Bowl, V&A Waterfront or central restaurants, stay centrally for that part of the trip. Then move to the side of the peninsula that matches your remaining plans.

A split stay works best when you have at least five or six nights in greater Cape Town. Spend the first portion near the city for museums, Table Mountain and urban dining, then move south for two or three nights. This avoids using every day as a return journey across the same roads.

A simple decision guide

• Stay in Simon's Town for Boulders Beach, Cape Point, False Bay, marine outings, diving and a quieter southern-peninsula base.
• Stay in Hout Bay for Chapman's Peak, the Atlantic Seaboard, western-coast scenery and easy access to Hout Bay harbour.
• Stay centrally if nightlife, city restaurants and a very short visit matter more than peninsula access.
• Split the stay when your holiday includes both central Cape Town and two or more full southern-peninsula days.

What about weather and road changes?

Cape Town weather often differs from one side of the mountain to the other. A calm False Bay morning does not guarantee the same conditions on the Atlantic coast. Keep the direction of your peninsula loop flexible, confirm Chapman's Peak Drive status and check current SANParks notices before travelling.

Do not reserve only one narrow weather window for the activity you care about most. A second night on the relevant side of the peninsula gives you room to move a boat trip, beach visit or Cape Point day when conditions change.

Driving and parking

A rental car gives the most flexibility for both bases, especially if you plan several coastal stops. Ask your accommodation whether parking is on site, gated or on the street. Cape Town Tourism advises visitors to park in secure, well-lit areas, keep valuables out of sight and confirm that the car is properly locked before walking away. If you do not want to drive, compare a private peninsula tour with pre-arranged transfers. Ride-hailing can work for point-to-point journeys, but availability may be less predictable in quieter southern areas, especially at early or late times.
